Permanent Nutritionists are encouraged to apply. The Administration for Children's Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of children and families through child welfare and juvenile justice services and community supports. ACS manages community-based supports and foster care services and provides subsidized childcare vouchers. ACS child protection staff respond to allegations of child maltreatment. In juvenile justice, ACS oversees detention, placement, and programs for youth in the community. The Division of Administration provides a wide range of support services throughout ACS to ensure all Divisions receive adequate and efficient support services to carry out their respective missions. The Food and Nutrition Services Unit manages a food services budget of $5M for FY 2024. It is responsible for the preparation and service of food to children and youth in the care of ACS. The full-serviced kitchens serve three meals and snacks to youth housed at the Crossroads and Horizon Secure Juvenile Detention Centers and the Nicholas Scoppetta Children's Center (NSCC) congregate facility. The Food and Nutrition Unit also partners with children, youth, and care providers to address behavior issues related to food and develops/designs specialized menus to accommodate food allergies, and medical, religious, and cultural dietary restrictions. The Food and Nutrition Services Unit is also responsible for distributing meal cards to youth at the NSCC congregate facility and maintaining operations of the vending machines throughout the Agency. The Unit oversees the execution of Light Refreshment and Modest Meal Requests for staff and youth-centered events throughout the year and ensures the requests comply with New York City Comptroller's Directive 6. What we're looking for: Under the general supervision of the Executive Director and Director of Food and Nutrition, the Nutritionist will be responsible for incorporating all up-to-date recommendations of the NYC Food Standards, National Research Council, Office of Children and Family Services regulations, Food and Drug Administration, and Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Proper nutrition and nutritional counseling to meet the needs of the youth in our care is an important role in our commitment for good health and well-being. The Division of Youth and Family Justice provides care, custody and control of approximately 300 youth daily in its network of secure and non-secure facilities. The dietitian will also formulate special diet menus for pregnancy, diabetes, allergies; Nutritionist will also review the menus for the thirteen contracted non-secure group homes, on an as needed basis, to ensure their compliance with dietary guidelines. The primary duties will include but are not limited to: Organize and plan menus for the youth in our care, in compliance with the New York City Food Standards. Prepare and recommend meals for youth with special dietary needs. Assist Food Service Manager in reviewing and updating menus as needed for corrective remedies to ensure strict adherence to established standards. Develop educational and training program. Maintains records and writes reports. Represent ACS at meetings with the Mayor's Office of Food Policy, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, other City Agencies, State oversite, and outside stakeholders. Provide nutrition technical assistance throughout the Agency. Organize and plan menus for the youth in ACS' care, in compliance with the City, State, and Federal requirements. Support and ensure compliance with food and nutrition requirements at non-secure detention and contracted sites. Ensure provision of meals for youth with special dietary needs and work with program to provide necessary foods. Draft nutrition, meal, food service, and staffing contract specifications and collaborate with Planning and Business Management, ACCO, Finance, and BLU for procurements. Oversee food procurement process, forecast budget, and work with DCAS to develop and refine food specifications, review bids, and participate in procurement strategy initiatives. Prepare annual Food Metrics Reports and other compliance reports with City Policies. Project manage and coordinate procurements and program for Food Pantry Program. Provide Food Service and Nutrition expertise to primarily to the Division of Youth and Family Justice and Family Permanency Services. Liaise across Agency divisions for program development and needs, construction, and renovations. Develop educational and training program and materials for children, youth, and staff. Qualification Requirements: A master's degree from an accredited college in nutrition or in public health; or A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by 18 semester credits in nutrition or public health on the graduate or undergraduate level, and two (2) years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in nutrition education. Special Qualification Requirements: Assignment Level II: One (1) year as a Nutritionist AL I with the City of New York or at least three (3) years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in nutrition education. Assignment Level III: Two (2) years as a Nutritionist AL I and AL II with the City of New York or five (5) years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in nutrition education, at least two (2) years of which must have been in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
