School Based Prevention and Early Intervention Program

SBCS' mental health prevention and intervention program - known as Dinosaur School - is a free program for children and parents designed to strengthen a child's social-emotional skills and provide a strong foundation for their academic success. Parent and small groups are offered in addition to monthly activities for the whole family.

Responsibilities: The PEI Specialist I, under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, Program Director, and Department Director, is responsible for providing evidence-based social-emotional mental health prevention and early intervention services to children (preschool through 3rd grade) and their families. This includes presenting the curriculum to whole classrooms, as well as potentially to large groups of parents and/or school staff. This position may include travel between school sites throughout the week. Other responsibilities include working closely on a day-to-day basis with teachers, administrators, nurses, counselors, and parents to create a school environment which results in improved behavior and academic achievement for all children. Services will be in keeping with the agency goals, objectives, mission, and style provided within a team framework.

Duties:
  • Process program referrals from designated school site.
  • Facilitate behavioral health pre-screenings of students from designated school site and score screening tools to determine student's risk level.
  • Conduct assessments and outcomes measures with students and their families, as indicated by screenings.
  • Provide Incredible Years (IY) interventions, including use of IY puppets, to whole classrooms and student small groups.
  • Assist the Promotor (a) in providing program and community activities and/or presentations for families.
  • Provide referrals, linkages, crisis intervention and safety planning to clients as necessary.
  • Communicate with school personnel regarding student's participation in the program.
  • Participate in school and community-based meetings as requested or required.
  • Complete all required case file documentation in a timely and routine fashion.
  • Maintain client case files in accordance to County and Agency standards;
  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, individual supervision and clinical group supervision.
  • Adhere to agency and County client confidentiality, HIPAA, and mandated reporting policies.
  • Attend all agency required meetings and trainings.
  • As other duties assigned.
Requirements
  • Must have a bachelor's degree in a social science, social services, or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with children and/or adolescents; experience should preferably have been in a school setting or community-based organization.
  • Must possess an ability to work with a diverse cultural population, as well as abilities to take initiative, set goals, and prioritize.
  • Must be organized and computer literate.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Bilingual - English/Spanish. Ability to read and write in Spanish and English, required.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population, possess cultural sensitivity, and maintain appropriate boundaries with clients.
Conditions of Employment
  • Employment may be conditioned upon satisfactory completion of certain background clearances which may include a Department of Justice criminal background check requiring my fingerprints (Live Scan), screening through the National Sex Offender Public Website, drug test, tuberculosis (TB) test, and such additional clearances as may be required under the program.
  • Candidate is required to have reliable transportation; therefore, the candidate must successfully complete a motor history check. Candidate must also possess and maintain a current valid California driver's license and valid auto insurance policy. (Approximately 10% of the time.)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Mentally and emotionally: Ability to work under deadlines, various projects and dealing with clients in crisis and difficult situations.

  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with objects or office machinery.
  • Communicating: Expressing or exchanging ideas. Communicating is important for those activities in which workers must impart information to clients or to the public, and in those activities in which they must convey detailed or important instructions to other workers accurately, or quickly.
