Beam is looking for a

Senior Mechanical

Design Engineer

to apply their imaginative thinking, creative problem solving, technical skills, and hands-on experience to support continuous improvement, new product design, and production efforts. The role requires a “doer” attitude that can conceptualize, prototype, test, and transition designs to production. The challenge and excitement for our growing team of designers and engineers is to evolve and optimize existing products and expand the product portfolio while meeting these unique design goals. The work is hands-on, dynamic, and spans multiple design disciplines.

Responsibilities ·

Conceptualize through sketches and basic modeling to efficiently communicate concepts early in the design process ·

Complete detailed design of structures, enclosures, and mechanisms ·

Consider and apply environmental, operation, and serviceability requirements ·

Determine appropriate materials and manufacturing methods ·

Work independently and collaboratively when needed with engineering, manufacturing, operations, and service teams ·

Creatively attack problems to determine solutions ·

Determine loads for complex structures based on real world conditions, code requirements, testing, and best practices ·

Analyze designs through hand calculations and computer aided tools ·

Perform formal trade studies to evaluate and modify custom designs and commercial off-the-shelf parts ·

Produce and maintain part and assembly drawings for manufacturing ·

Prototype, evaluate, and iterate designs through rapid manufacturing, test, and analysis ·

Draft, lead, and setup tests when needed evaluate or aide in the design process ·

Assist with planning to set timeline expectations and meet deliverable deadlines ·

Create documentation for manufacturing and assembly procedures ·

Continue to learn, innovate, and explore new ideas to develop personal knowledge and improve product portfolio

Requirements ·

BS degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or similar and five (5+) years of experience in related field ·

Past work integrating large and complex systems for automotive, energy, or aerospace ·

Ability to translate product objectives into practical concept designs while considering multiple design perspectives and constraints ·

Effectively communicate designs through sketches and other efficient means ·

Experience designing for various manual and machine-controlled manufacturing processes including welding, multi-axis machining, sheet metal forming, laser and plasma cutting, and additive printing ·

Solid understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, and thermodynamics ·

Extensive experience using Solidworks (CAD) tools ·

Working experience with finite element analysis (FEA) ·

Experience specifying weldments for aluminum, steel, and other material types ·

Knowledge and application of tolerance analysis and methods ·

Expert drafting part and assembly drawings per industry standards ·

Comfortable working with hand tools, measurement devices, and heavy machinery ·

Combined creative and analytical thinking ·

Comfortable working independently and proactive in seeking help when needed ·

Portfolio or visual examples and explanations of past work

Additional Skills ·

Design for medium to large scale plastic and composite manufacturing methods such as injection molding, rotational molding, reaction injection molding, thermoforming, resin infusion, open-molding, etc. ·

Design to ingress protection (IP) and NEMA standards for large scale electrical system enclosures, housings, or vehicles to operate in extreme environmental conditions ·

Hydraulic systems design and assembly ·

Heavy equipment rigging ·

High-capacity trailer design and certification processes ·

Electric motor and gearbox specification and design ·

Understanding of ASCE and IBC codes
