The Herrett Center Director manages all administrative aspects of the Herrett Center for Arts and Science. The Director shapes the agenda for curated exhibitions, community, and campus projects in support of the long history of the Herrett Center and its role as a cultural cornerstone in the Magic Valley. The Director also implements strategic vision and defines and supports organizational culture within the Herrett Center, participating in strategic planning and budgeting, as well as collaborating closely with other departments, in-house staff, faculty, and community entities to bring quality programming to the CSI campus. The director is also the community face of the Center, representing the Herrett Center to community organizations.

Herrett Center Director is primarily responsible for the daily operation of the museum and the design. The director oversees and delegates production and installation of in-house and traveling exhibitions. The Director oversees permanent and temporary collections in the care of the Herrett Center, acting as curator, registrar, and conservator.

This position is also responsible for integration of collections into exhibits, public events, and educational programming. The Director collaborates with the CSI art department to develop the Jean B. King Gallery exhibit schedule and hires and supervises part-time staff for installation and decommission of Jean B. King Gallery exhibits.

The Director position is exempt, full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with evening, weekend, and holiday requirements as necessary to support effective staffing of the center.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Supervise Herrett Center employees, ensuring staff receive appropriate training and coaching to fulfill the expectations of their jobs and to grow and develop. Encourage the integration of front-line staff with back-office staff and ensure staff understand how their roles contribute to meeting the mission of the institution.
  • With the Events & Academic Coordinator, oversee the execution, development, and evaluation of educational and engagement programs (onsite, offsite, and virtual) that forward the mission of the Herrett Center Museum, meet the needs of primary audiences (schools and families) and encourage the participation of new audiences.
  • Establish and oversee the development and achievement of department goals for attendance, program delivery, evaluations, communication, exhibit development, archives/collections preservation, and more.
  • Work creatively to develop permanent and special exhibits inside the Herrett Center, as well as virtual and pop-up exhibitions of interest to stakeholders. Work to rotate these exhibits often to encourage new audiences and experiences.
  • Work closely with the CSI Foundation, Inc. identifying program needs and prioritizing expenditures for the Herrett Center.
  • Partner with CSI's grant writers to write grants, collect data, and create grant reports to secure project-based funding for exhibitions, collections, and programming. Contribute and consult for general operations grants. Look for opportunities for grant funding that are compatible with department needs and goals.
  • Partner with CSI's Public Information Office to promote the Herrett Center Museum programs, exhibitions, and experiences through social media, print media, ad buys, direct mail, email, and marketing events.
  • Partner with CSI's Maintenance Department to ensure safe, successful events and experiences on Museum grounds, as well as repairs and improvements to exhibits, exhibit technology and lighting, and galleries.
  • Represent CSI and the Herrett Center in the community through participation in civic clubs/museum organizations, committees, and conferences. Be the public face of the Herrett Center working to introduce a new clientele to the Center.
  • Oversee and/or delegate the design, production, and maintenance of exhibits for the Herrett Center.
  • Selection and initial conceptualization of exhibit themes, schedules, materials, and budgets.
  • Oversee and/or delegate the installation and changing of art exhibits in the King Art Gallery.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of procedures regarding safe storage, exhibition, and minor repair of artifacts.
  • Oversees the maintenance of appropriate environmental conditions for the safekeeping of the collections.
  • Oversees acquisitions, de-accession, and collection management policies, develop permanent and temporary collection records and maintain records related to collections insurance.
  • Execute loans, packing, shipping, and storage of museum objects.
  • Maintains historic photos and diversified historical printed materials related to the Herrett Center, its programs and collections.
  • Supervises the creation of database records for all artifacts.
  • Oversees the maintenance and administration of the Herrett Center security alarm system and software, keeping records, updating user information, and training new employees as needed.
  • Supervises anthropology and graphic design interns and/or volunteers when appropriate.
  • Provide timely feedback complete annual written performance reviews for all employees.
  • Maintain certification and/or accreditation requirements as deemed appropriate by the college.

SPECIFIC SKILLS & TECHNICAL EXPERTISE REQUIRED

  • Develop and maintain a courteous and effective working relationship with a diverse staff in the planning and production of exhibits and installation and removal of changing art shows.
  • Able to maintain an organized and efficient working environment including the equipment and resources of the design studio, and the conservation laboratory.
  • Able to efficiently manage personal time and a complex production schedule to allow successful completion of exhibits according to production schedules.
    Work and interact effectively with colleagues, staff, students, scientists, Native American tribal representatives, college administrators, and others of various cultural and socio- economic backgrounds.
  • Able to communicate with the general public in a variety of contexts including public speaking, correspondence, and workshops.
  • Establish and cultivate strong relationships with potential and current donors.
  • Familiar with common graphic studio equipment including a word processor, scanner, design software, dry mount press, photocopier, digital camera, projectors, and assorted hand tools.
  • Demonstrate commitment to and knowledge of modern principles of professional collections care (or demonstrate a willingness to learn).
  • Accurately complete federal and state reporting. Comply with all appropriate state and federal laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Understand NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) and how it relates to the potential acquisition of Native American artifacts.
    Maintain a high level of professional ethics and integrity in dealing with confidential information related to donors to the collection and other sensitive information related to the collection and archives.
  • Able to follow institutional policies and procedures related to collections care and management as established by the American Association of Museums.
  • Cooperate with other areas of the College to provide an effective program of loaning and tracking artwork from the CSI Permanent Art collection.
  • Ability to work under the stress of short exhibit turn-around times, particularly in timely shipping and receiving of travelling exhibits.

EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS

  • Position occasionally requires some heavy lifting (freight boxes and exhibit components). Working hour adjustments are necessary including evenings, weekends, and during some normal campus holiday closures such as Thanksgiving and Christmas Breaks to meet the needs of the community.
