SummaryIncumbent serves as a Maintenance Worker at the Kansas City Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Performs demolition, renovation and construction of structures and utilities for which Engineering Service is responsible throughout the Medical Center. First consideration will go to Kansas City VA employees.VideosDutiesThe Maintenance Worker accomplishes assignments in all categories of engineering work (i.e. electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, mechanical, air conditioning, laboring and painting). Accomplishes almost any type of engineering assignment except those of a complex nature. Constantly vigilant in observing equipment, structural and utility defects, reporting same by initiating work requests or by word of mouth. Learns to properly interpret and use drawings, prints and manuals for minor installations and repairs of equipment. Some interpretations will require the assistance of a journeyman. Must be able to determine supply and material needs and properly submit purchase requests for same. Uses many of the handand power tools and test instruments associated with the engineering trades and work assignmentsMajor duties include, but are not limited to the following:Work on the Construction Crew and will be under the supervision of the Construction Crew Supervisor. Assignments are written or verbal from the Supervisor, Work leaders or Journeymen. Incumbent works with minimum supervision on less complicated tasks or with a journeyman on more complex tasks.Incumbent learns his/her way about the entire Medical Center Complex. Must learn the locations of various equipment in which repairs or maintenance is to be performed. Incumbent must be able to read and understand manufacturers' instructions, parts manuals, repair manuals and the more common or simple diagrams or prints when performing maintenance tasks.Incumbent is responsible for the physical security of all tools and equipment assigned to the position, as well as that of the facility. Work assignments are considered incomplete until the equipment or system is restored or placed into operation, all debris is removed and the work area is clean. The work site must be maintained broom clean, especially before quitting time each day. Working conditions include hazards caused by hot steam and hot water pipes, extremes of heat, sewer fumes, falls from ladders and scaffolds, bumps from overhead pipes or low ceilings in the working area. May be assigned to areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present.
