The Office of Innovation and Incubation (I&I) provides incubation, management, and oversight of charter, contract, and alternative schools as options for CPS students and families. I&I also leads the district's Academic RFP process, which provides school communities across the city with access to highly demanded programs. I&I oversees 132 schools and programs, including charter school campuses, contract schools, Alternative Learning Opportunities Programs (ALOP) and SAFE Schools, which together educate well over 60,000 students.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Manager of School Performance and Support, the School Re-authorization Specialist is primarily responsible for review and completion of financial and legal compliance oversight practices of the office. The School Re-authorization Specialist Specialist focuses on the review of operational and financial documents and ensures a school reauthorization process supports high-quality decision-making and meets the statutory timeline requirements. The Specialist will work with CPS departments to serve as a liaison between CPS departments and schools. Other related responsibilities include technical assistance and support for schools.

The School Re-authorization Specialist will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Annually plan for and support authorization processes, in particular school renewal.
  • Develop process improvements for the school reauthorization process and timeline and annual financial and compliance reviews.
  • Identify and organize relevant compliance, financial and operational performance data for school authorization processes.
  • Support the development of evaluation rubrics for school re-authorization processes.
  • Monitor the satisfaction of all contractual conditions identified in school agreements.
  • Complete annual review of all charter, contract and option school performance against contract accountability plan.
  • Create a consistent tracking system that ensures alignment with the accountability plan and board policies.
  • Implement review according to the accountability plan frameworks for compliance, finance and operations.
  • Liaise with partner departments to address school compliance and operations issues including department of grants, English learners, diverse learners, and facilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the School Re-authorization Specialist must possess the following qualifications:

Education Required:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
Experience Required:
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with multiple stakeholders and overseeing large projects in a financial or compliance-related role is required.
  • Previous experience working for a school district or education-related agency preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and diplomacy skills
  • Strong communication skills, including developing external communication documents for a wide range of audiences and effectively addressing stakeholder concerns and inquiries
  • The ability to receive, internalize, and respond to feedback from department leadership, manager, colleagues, and external partners
Conditions of Employment

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:
  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
  • Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19 - Unless approved for a medical or religious exemption, all employees are required to be up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and to submit proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire.
