As a Histopathology Technical Lead, your primary responsibility will be leading the Histopathology technicians and assistants in processing, analyzing, and reporting results for clinical veterinary histopathology specimens. The Histopathology Technical Lead will have a direct leadership role in the laboratory. This position will also be required to develop, test, implement, and master new initiatives of the Histopathology Department in the form of new policies, procedures, testing, etc. This position works closely with the supervisor/manager/medical team to provide coaching, training, direction, and follow-up to all technicians and assistants. This position is based in Louisville, Kentucky.

Responsibilities and Duties

Including but not limited to

  • Examines slides and/or blocks to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
  • May label requisitions, specimen containers, cassettes, and/or slides and affix coverslip to slides.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and tracks all routine maintenance and quality controls performed.
  • Files, retrieves, and distributes blocks, slides, and pathology reports.
  • Operates, cleans, and sterilizes laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, and workstations.
  • Disposes of hazardous chemical waste per regulatory guidelines.
  • Complies with all State, Federal, and professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, policies, and procedural manuals.
  • Adherence to State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety, and OSHA Regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions.
  • Contribute to quality improve tickets as lead investigator, CAPA, and RCA.
  • Consulting with colleagues, supervisor, and medical team.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to accomplish fast, accurate, and comprehensive results.
  • Flexibility to work overtime depending on business needs.
  • Act as a mentor and guide for other technicians in the department.
  • Develop, test, implement, and master any new testing in the Histopathology Department.
  • Become an expert in Quality Assurance, Inventory Management, and Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Assist in staffing, onboarding, and training new colleagues.
  • Ability to perform the responsibilities of Lab Assistant 1, Histopathology Clerks and Assistants, Grossing Technician 1 and Histology Technician 1.

Knowledge, Qualifications

  • BA or BS in Biology, Animal Science, or related Natural Science Field OR Certified Veterinary Technician/Associates Degree/ HT or HTL
  • 2-5 years of experience in a Histology Laboratory is required.
  • Completed the following coursework in MediaLab:
    • Communication Basics for Laboratory Leaders
    • Quality Management System
    • Risk Management in the Clinical Laboratory
    • Basics of Lean and Six Sigma for the Laboratory
  • Team Oriented.
  • Good communication and people skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Robust organization and time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills required.
