Applicants may apply and interview only one time during a six-month period.THE POSITION: This is a position within the Selma Fire Department's EMS Division. It is an EMS position that will be assigned to work on an ambulance. The successful person will provide the highest level of care, treatment, and transport for all patients in an expedient and safe manner as specified by Fresno County EMS agency and Selma Fire Department Policy, Procedure, and Protocols. This is per diem employment with no set hours established and no benefits. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under supervision, provide Basic Life Support services to ill and injured persons in the pre-hospital and inter-facility setting; maintain, operate, and assist in an Advance Life Support ambulance; Administer prescribe treatment at the site of an emergency by performing such activities as first aid, immobilization of injuries, application of splints, administration of oxygen, treatment of minor wounds or abrasions, or administration of other Basic Life Support procedures recognized by Fresno County EMS authority. The successful person will maintain a professional appearance and attitude at all times when representing the Selma Fire Department; responsible for completion and accuracy of all paperwork; assist in the maintenance of EMS equipment and stations; may participate in the department's public education programs and training division; and perform other duties as required. KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: Knowledge of: the geography of the local area; all pertinent policies, procedures, and protocol as they apply to this position. Ability to: to drive an ambulance with care and safety in accordance with traffic laws and ordinances; keep records and prepare reports; understand and carry out oral and written directions; maintain cooperative working relationships; use all equipment carried by an ambulance. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities in qualifying. High school diploma or equivalent is required. REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a current Fresno County EMT 1A certificate (required prior to employment), current Basic Cardiac Life Support - provider or instructor, current California Ambulance Driver certificate with a current Medical Examiner's card, and possession of an appropriate California driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles. MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The mental and physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Requires a very high degree of concentration for extended periods of time; ability to analyze and interpret data from a wide array of sources; make corrective decisions under stress; utilization of both strength and agility in the handling of emergency medical situations including moderate walking, lifting of moderate to heavy moving objects (100+ pounds), climbing, crawling, stooping and bending, high degree of hand / eye coordination and ability to hear, taste, and smell. EXAMINATION PROCESS: Applications will be evaluated and applicants who appear to be most qualified in terms of experience and training will be invited to participate in job-related interview. A pre-appointment background will be conducted prior to initial offer of employment. Followed by a physical exam (including drug and alcohol testing) administered by a city physician. Members of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). In accordance with the California Public Employees Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA), the City of Selma will offer the following retirement benefit (2.0% at 62) to new PERS members beginning January 1, 2013 with three (3) years final compensation. Existing PERS members with no break in service will receive the 2.7% at 55 formula with three (3) years final compensation. City pays a portion of the employee and dependent coverage costs of group medical, dental and vision insurance. Life insurance - $100,000 per employee. Short and long term disability insurance. 12 working days vacation per year. Additional days based on years of service. 12 days sick leave per year. 16 holidays annually: 13 city observed holidays, two floating holidays plus one birthday credit.
