Identifying student needs through this data and consulting with administrators guides program development. Middle school counselors balance their program by addressing students' academic, career and social/emotional development in addition to balancing delivery methods, recognizing that students learn in multiple ways. The end result of this work is reflected in improvement in academic, attendance and discipline outcomes related to academic development, college and career readiness and social/emotional development. ResponsibilitiesSpecific responsibilities include:GOALS:Assist students both academically and socially to be productive members of the school community.Advise students in the college and career readiness process.Work collaboratively with students and all stakeholders assisting them in meeting their academic and social/emotional goals.Inspire students by demonstrating belief in their students' abilities and by providing the support students need to meet challenging academic demandsResponsibilities:Using district/school data, designs a measurable, strategic plan for the systemic delivery of a comprehensive school counseling program, including targeted interventions designed to address inequities and close achievementgapsDevelops and delivers a standards-based counseling curriculum that is designed in the district approved format and supports all students in developing academic/technical competencies, career/workplace readiness, and the personal/social skills necessary for success in higher education, the workplace, and other post-secondary options. Contributes to a college and career ready culture within the school by providing classroom activities, group counseling, or individual sessions that promote equity and access by supporting all students to prepare for, participate in, and succeed in rigorous academic programs.Contributes to development, coordination and implementation of effective strategies for grade-to-grade, school-to-school and school-to-post-secondary transitions for all students.Assesses the effectiveness of transition planning in positively impacting student achievementUtilizes various career assessment techniques to assist students in understanding and developing their career abilities and interests.Seeks out and implements evidence-based counseling theories and techniques to deliver short term counseling interventions to resolve immediate conflicts/problems, intervene in school-specific situations that disrupt learning, and respond to crisis events.Assesses the effectiveness of interventions and responses in positively impacting student achievement.Welcomes and encourages every family to become active participants in their child's middle school experienceUses two way communication with families about student performance and responds promptly and carefully to communication from families.Regularly reflects on his/her practice, individually and with colleagues.Consistently seeks outs and applies ideas for improving practice from supervisors, colleagues, and professional developmental activities to gain expertise.Coordinates and supports 504 development in conjunction with school administrationIndividually and with colleagues develops strategies that contribute to the learning and productive behavior of all students.Qualifications Experience working with diverse communities, preferred Performs reasonable professional tasks or duties as may be requested by the Principal.Supplemental InformationAndover Public Schools (APS) seeks candidates who embody our ethos, which includes valuing the identities of all students, high expectations for all students, teaching excellence, collaboration, innovation, respect, and responsibility.
