Respiratory Therapy Team Leader

Position Summary / Career Interest:
The Respiratory Therapy Team Leader I assumes responsibility for performing patient care activities and other tasks that contribute to high-quality, safe, and effective patient care, such as executing protocols, dividing workloads, administering respiratory care, and educating patients, families, students, and other care providers.

Responsibilities:
  • Administers, monitors, and assesses the effectiveness of respiratory care in an efficient and effective manner for inpatients and outpatients of all developmental and maturational levels (neonatal to geriatric) under the supervision of a licensed Respiratory Therapist.
  • Uses independent judgement in the application of respiratory care protocols and is self-motivated to take responsible and professional action within the scope of practice.
  • Demonstrates accountability for own actions, decisions, and learning needs.
  • Maintains a patient-centered focus and strives to support the mission, goals, and values of the hospital, department and division.
  • Follows policies, procedures, standards and assists with the enforcement.
  • Interacts with physicians and other health system staff to provide quality, safe, and efficient care for the patient.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, health care providers, and other customers both orally and written/via computer.
  • Maintains positive working relations with customers. Demonstrates mature, sensitive, and effective communications with all age groups, especially under high levels of stress.
  • Assumes responsibility for risk and safety issues associated with position. - Educates patients and family members of all developmental and maturational levels (neonatal to geriatric) regarding cardio-respiratory topics, medications, equipment, and procedures.
  • Reacts appropriately under high levels of stress.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in the face of uncertainty, and can take responsible and professional action without awaiting orders.
  • Coordinates the patient care team and leads a designated team (e.g., Team 6).
  • Assists in the oversight of other staff members during advanced procedures.
  • At the direction of a supervisor, serves as the acting supervisor.
  • Assists in the orientation, training, and evaluation of students, new employees, and other members of the health care team.
  • Participates on the rapid response or code blue teams, as needed.
  • Assist with the ambulation of patients.
  • Moves ventilators and other items within the campus.
  • Quickly respond to critical situations including taking stairs to reach emergencies and assist in the removal of patients from the building (in case of fire).
  • *Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Current Team Leader opportunities include:

Team Leader I (Team 2) Dayshift:
Therapists on this team cover patient care ranging from intensive care and floor units such as:
  • Surgical and Trauma Intensive Care Units
  • Floor areas that specialize in cystic fibrosis and post-surgical care patient populations
Team Leader I (Team Cambridge) Nightshift:
Therapists on this team cover patient care ranging from intensive care and floor units such as:
  • Neuroscience and Medicine Intensive Care Units
  • Floor areas that specialize in cancer care, post-surgical care, neuro and ENT patient populations
Team Leader I (Team 4/5):
Therapists on this team cover patient care ranging from intensive care and floor units such as:
  • Neonatal, Pediatric and Burn Intensive Care Units
  • Floor areas that specialize in post-surgical care and internal medicine patient populations
Team Leader I (Team Float) Dayshift

Team Leader I (Team Float) Nightshift

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required:
  • Associate degree in respiratory care (or equivalent training)
  • Certified in BLS
  • Certified in ACLS and PALS/NRP within six months of hire
  • Three years of experience in critical care (internal candidates); five years of experience in critical care (external candidates)
  • Respiratory Therapist (RT) license from the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts
  • RRT credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
  • 20 points in the KURT Clinical Advancement program (not applicable for external candidates)
Preferred:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Respiratory Care or related field
  • Experience in clinical instruction of students
