This position is located in the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Asst Secretary for Housing-Federal Housing Commissioner.The Office of Housing provides vital public services through its nationally administered programs. It oversees the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), the largest mortgage insurer in the world, and regulates important parts of the housing industry. The Office of Housing is committed to building and preserving healthy neighborhoods and communities through homeownership, rental housing and healthcare opportunities.

The Office of Single Family Housing is responsible for the overall management of Single Family mortgage insurance programs for the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). The Office assists in the expansion of affordable and quality homeownership opportunities for individuals and families who are traditionally underserved by the private market. The Office also acts as a stabilizing force in the single family home financing market by increasing access to mortgage credit. Policies and programs administered by the Office-from becoming an FHA-approved mortgage lender or other stakeholder, to mortgage origination through post-closing and endorsement processes, servicing of FHA mortgages, and beyond-assist in the provision of these affordable mortgage programs while meeting the needs of borrowers. These functions are carried out by dedicated staff in our Washington, DC headquarters, four Homeownership Centers in Atlanta, GA, Denver, CO, Philadelphia, PA, and Santa Ana, CA, and through our National Servicing Center in Tulsa, OK.

As a/an Senior Underwriter, you will:

  • Assist the Branch Chief in monitoring the status of goal accomplishment.
  • Advise the Chief of potential problems in attainment of goals and objectives.
  • Research required underwriting procedures and techniques, requiring comprehensive knowledge of Direct Endorsement rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Serve as an expert-level resource within his/her Office on matters relating to Underwriting and other Direct Endorsement issues.
  • Serve on special task forces or Teams convened to address issues that have proved resistant to solution or effective implementation in the past.

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience: For the GS-13, you must have one year (52 full weeks) of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience for this position includes:

  • Overseeing projects that require coordinating and integrating the work of others and providing progress reports to management or high-level officials; AND
  • Underwriting single-family residential properties; AND
  • Performing trend analysis, reporting findings and writing recommendations to management officials; AND
  • Implementing and evaluating programs areas and providing recommendations for improvements.

Experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week on your resume.

Time-in-Grade: In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:

For the GS-13 you must have been at the GS-12 level for 52 weeks.

Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.
