Job Description:

Dedicated occupational therapist/certified lymphedema therapist for a multi-physician breast cancer surgical oncology practice to regularly perform customer needs assessment and evaluation to help solve health related problems resulting from cancer treatment. This includes maintaining strong relationships with patients, caregivers, and staff on treatment expectations and outcome, and providing education and interventions to ensure return to the highest achievable level of function.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for planning and administering Occupational Therapy Plan of Care, including:

  • Conduct baseline assessments and pre-operative educational sessions on how to prevent or reduce functional deficits prior to the start of medical treatment
  • Conduct ongoing screening and monitoring of performance deficits and improvements throughout survivorship, and modifying intervention to meet changing needs
  • Provide manual therapy techniques to address soft tissue trauma due to surgery, scar tissue, and/or radiation to decrease pain and restore active range of motion
  • Provide training on therapeutic exercises and muscle re-education techniques, including neck, thorax, and arm, which progresses into meaningful activities such as grooming or dressing
  • Provide instruction on self-care management, including infection prevention and adapted clothing during recovery
  • Help patients reduce the risk of lymphedema by providing education on modifying ADLS/IADLs, skin care precautions, and self-monitoring for signs and symptoms
  • Address lymphedema with restorative treatment techniques such as manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging, and measuring for compression garments
  • Provide education and instruction on strategies to return to occupational roles such as parenting, managing home, and working, including conserving energy, managing fatigue, engaging in leisure activities, and developing coping skills
  • Identify and recommend community outreach and support programs to address individual patient needs
Other Duties Including:
  • Develop and implement clinical education programs, including training on equipment, protocols, and policies
  • Act as research coordinator for oncology rehabilitation and lymphedema trials, including performance of surveys, studies, and projects
  • Use research and data analysis to implement preventive, proactive and evidence-based intervention to support recovery and progress, both post-operatively and long-term
  • Regularly evaluate effectiveness of treatment protocols and billing procedures through both quantitative and qualitative analysis, and initiate changes as needed
  • Maintain thorough and timely electronic medical records (EMR) and documentation of treatment plan, medical necessity, patient progress, and ongoing intervention recommendations
  • Regular review of commercial and national health insurance policies and requirements related to prior authorization and billing, including HCPCS/CPT/ICD - 10 to ensure proper and timely reimbursement for patient care
  • Collaborate and communicate with physicians, families, and oncology care team, including oncologists and surgeons in coordinating patient treatment progress
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Cancer rehabilitation interest/experience
  • Adult outpatient experience


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Graduate from an accredited Occupational Therapy program
  • Successful completion of those educational requirements as mandated for state licensure or eligibility for a license in Occupational Therapy
  • Current Occupational Therapy State licensure or eligibility for licensure in the state of practice
  • Lymphedema Certification
