Job description: The Briggs Animal Adoption Center, a program of The National Humane Education Society, located near Charles Town, WV, in historic Jefferson County, has a job opening for a part-time staff veterinarian. Provides veterinary medicine services for homeless animals owned by The National Humane Education Society (NHES) and cared for at its flagship facility, Briggs Animal Adoption Center (BAAC). Position also supervises veterinary assistant activities and, as part of BAAC’s benefits program, provides veterinary medicine services for employee-owned animals. Essential Functions: Ensure that BAAC Veterinary Clinic receives all appropriate facility licenses as may be required by state law, and that each complies with all other rules, laws, and regulations relating to the provision of animal care as otherwise required by the West Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent governing body) Provide veterinary care and implement veterinary standard care policies as requested by BAAC operations and management. Administer the storage, handling and usage of all controlled drugs as allowed by law Responsible for ensuring BAAC is in compliance with all rules and regulations relating to the disposal of medical waste Responsible for ensuring that all appropriate medical reports are being maintained Perform surgical function and manage aftercare needs Perform surgeries and medical treatments in accordance with accepted standards Refer animals to specialists as required or at BAAC management’s request Examine animals for adoption and discuss medical issues with BAAC management, adoption staff, and with adopters as the need arises Provide in-house veterinary medicine trainings/workshops to staff as necessary Supervise veterinary assistant in performance of his/her job duties Always treat animals and people with respect; contribute to effective teamwork; promote cooperation; and foster public relations beneficial to NHES and BAAC Provide veterinary medicine services to employee-owned animals Additional Duties: Participate in ongoing self-assessment program as required Maintain continuing education credits as required by law, and attend any classes/seminars as requested by management Working Conditions: Veterinary clinic, animal adoption center/shelter environment, and constant exposure to companion animals (dogs and cats) Supervisor/Consultations: Staff veterinarian position reports to the Manager of BAAC. Consultations and ongoing working relationship with BAAC Manager and animal care staff and consultations with NHES executive and administrative staff as required. Qualifications: Current WV State Licensed DVM required Current DEA license/registration number required Ability to safely lift animals weighing up to 50 lbs. Ability to act with professionalism, courtesy, tact and sound judgment Rabies inoculations are required or must be waived Must have basic computer skills Animal shelter experience preferred Part-time employment position, working approximately 18 hours per week, 6 hours each day, 3 days a week. Initial agreed upon days of employment are Wednesdays through Fridays. Also includes intermittent telephone consultations and occasional on-call emergency work as needed.
