As a Walmart Data Modeler, you will dig into our mammoth scale of data to help unleash the power of retail data science by imagining, developing, and maintaining data models that our Data Engineers, Scientists and Analysts can rely on. You will partner with Data Engineers, Data Scientists, Stewards, other engineers, and business stakeholders to solve complex and exciting modeling and analytical challenges so that we can build out capabilities that evolve the retail business model while making a positive impact on our customers' lives.

About Team:
Everyone has data, but the sheer volume of data at Walmart can be limitless. In the Data Engineering team, we help Walmart manage this data by building pipelines and data lakes to prepare big data for analysis and unlocking actionable insights in real-time. We also use cross-departmental data and machine learning to build a holistic view of true profitability, saving millions of dollars across item categories and geographies while assisting our leadership in making better decisions faster.

What you'll do:
  • Work with the Application Development team to implement data strategies, build data flows and develop conceptual data models.
  • Create logical and physical data models using best practices to ensure high data quality and support application, batch, and interactive use cases.
  • Create, optimize, and update logical and physical data models to support new and existing projects according to company standards.
  • Create data modeling solutions optimized for relational, dimensional, and NoSQL databases.
  • Maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models along with corresponding metadata.
  • Develop best practices for standard naming conventions and coding practices to ensure consistency of data models.
  • Recommend opportunities for reuse of data models in new environments.
  • Perform reverse engineering of physical data models from databases and SQL scripts.
  • Evaluate data models and physical databases for variances and discrepancies.
  • Validate business data objects for accuracy and completeness.
  • Analyze data-related system integration challenges and propose appropriate solutions.
  • Guide System Analysts, Engineers, Programmers and others on project limitations and capabilities, performance requirements and interfaces.
  • Review modifications to existing software to improve efficiency and performance.
  • Examine new application design and recommend corrections if required.
What you'll bring:
  • Good academic record and graduated (B.E/ B.Tech / M.E / M.Tech/ MBA)
  • At least 10+years of hand-on data warehousing experience
  • Strong knowledge of different data modeling techniques for data warehousing - 3NF, Dimensional, hybrid etc.
  • Experience working on large (100 TB+) scale data warehouses (DW)/ operational data stores (ODS)
  • Significant experience in building data models for MPP, Relational and NoSQL technologies such as BigData, Hive, SQL*Server, Hadoop, Cassandra, Cloud DBs like Big Query and/or Snowflake
  • Good experience of working with globally distributed teams in a collaborative and productive manner
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills across variety of stakeholders, ability to negotiate with and influence others.
