Recycling sorters work as quality control line workers by hand sorting recyclable materials and trash from the recycling stream. Sorters are responsible to ensure unacceptable materials are removed from recycling so that recyclable materials are acceptable for sale to mills or brokers. The hours and physical demand may vary by location.

Responsibilities of Position:

  • Performs duties in a safe manner in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and company policies.
  • Ensures proper PPE is utilized, as well as compliance with Lock Out Tag Out procedures are adhered to consistently.
  • Inspects materials and sorts items or materials into designated areas according to type, size, condition, color, or paper grade.
  • Pulls contaminants out of paper or off of floor.
  • Performs cleaning duties related to plant equipment and general housekeeping.
  • Reports system problems immediately to management.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area and surrounding area.
  • Dumps boxes and containers of material into designated area(s).
  • Maintains an excellent attendance record and an excellent safety and work quality record.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the job (prolonged physical exertions, including lifting, carrying. reaching, bending, pushing, pulling, and climbing).
  • Mechanical aptitude preferred
  • Self-starter, aggressive work ethic and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Performs duties in a safe manner in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and company policies
  • Good written and verbal communication skills to be able to communicate effectively and professionally with internal and external customers. Must be able to read and speak the English language well enough to communicate, understand, and respond to questions, directions, traffic signs, signals, and safety training.
Physical Requirements in a Regular workday:
  • Occasionally lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 35lbs.
  • Frequently walking.
  • Occasionally stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling.
  • Occasionally Climbing and/or balancing.
  • Continuously working outside and inside.
  • Working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, other airborne matter.
Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:
  • Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas.
  • Exposure to residential and commercial waste.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Must have a Valid driver's license.
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing.
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language.
