General Functions

This position is responsible for directing the fiscal functions of the organization in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and other regulatory and advisory organizations and in accordance with financial management techniques and practices appropriate within the nonprofit environment. These responsibilities include financial management, financial procedure development and implementation, management of accounting systems, budget planning and implementation, risk management, short and long term forecasting, and bank relations. In addition, this position is responsible for the supervision of assigned managers.

Major Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Establish and implement policies and procedures for all financial management functions, ensuring appropriate controls and compliance with generally accepted accounting practices.

Strategic Planning

  • Collaborate with the President/CEO and Board of Directors to develop annual income and expense budget. Provide timely and complete reporting of financial results and recommendations for necessary actions to maintain the fiscal health of the Agency.
  • Works closely with Agencys leadership and managers to maintain, analyze, and interpret general ledger for all funds; and manage the preparation and analysis of financial reports on a monthly and as needed basis.
  • Oversee the process for identifying and evaluating opportunities for improved financial operations, record-keeping and reporting, working with external auditors to prepare and review audit schedules and annual report of audit findings.

Resource Development

  • Seek and secure financial support and resources by overseeing the process for tracking and managing various grant funds, including obtaining and preparing financial reports required to comply with grant requirements; and all assets and investments, including real property, equities, bonds and other assets.

Resource Management

  • Lead organizational planning and development of operating and fund account budgets, and control expenditures against budget.
  • Ensure the maintenance of financial records and record-keeping systems to ensure compliance with all regulations, generally accepted accounting practices and contractual requirements.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of effective employee supervision, including selection, training, work evaluation and discipline.
  • Principles and methods of administration including goal setting, budget management, policy and procedure development and implementation, evaluation and work standards, payroll and benefits.
  • Budgeting and accounting practices, processes and procedures of nonprofit organizations.
  • Computer applications related to the work.
  • The mission, objectives, policies, programs and procedures of Boys & Girls Clubs.

Ability to:

  • Plan, organize, direct, assign, review and evaluate the work of subordinates.
  • Select, motivate, and evaluate staff and provide for their training and development.
  • Analyze complex financial problems, evaluate alternatives and recommend or adopt effective courses of action.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.
  • Exercise independent judgment and initiative within general policy guidelines.
  • Manage multiple tasks and develop solutions to problems.
  • Plan and execute on strategy; think and plan strategically.
  • Manage and track operating expense budget, corporate revenue and operating income.
  • Evaluate and advise on the impact of long range planning, introduction of new programs/strategies and regulatory action.
  • Develop a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism which includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs.
  • Interact professionally with staff, Board members, volunteers and other related agencies.

Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelors degree in accounting or finance; CPA certification preferred. Graduate-level degree preferred.
  • At least 8-10 years of progressively responsible work experience managing the accounting functions in a nonprofit agency, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, direct and coordinate operations in budget management.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong technical, analytical, judgment, operational and big financial picture focus
  • Possession of a valid state driver license.
