The Attorney will provide legal assistance and advice to the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Public Safety Officers Benefits (PSOB) Program. The Attorney will: Provide initial and appeal level review of claims requesting funding under the PSOB Act. Evaluate claims eligibility for funding using the PSOB Act, its implementing regulations, and agency interpretive rules. Advise determining officials of complex legal and factual issues associated with PSOB funding requests. Compose memoranda assessing the legal sufficiency of PSOB Office funding determinations and recommend approval or denial. Assess legal sufficiency of denied PSOB requests being appealed to the highest level of agency review. Draft determinations approving or denying requests being appealed to the BJA Director and detailing legal basis for decision. Track changes to the PSOB Act and its implementing regulations. Produce detailed legal memoranda discussing novel legal and factual issues arising from potential changes to the PSOB Act and its implementing regulations. Minimum Requirements: At a minimum, the candidate shall be admitted to the bar (with active status) and licensed to practice in at least one State, the District of Columbia, or in one of the principal US territories, with active status. Requirements: The Attorney I Juris Doctorate At least two (2) years of paid post-JD legal practice experience, i.e., served as an attorney in a law office or government setting after passing the bar. The Attorney II Juris Doctorate At least three (3) years of paid post-JD legal practice experience, i.e., served as an attorney in a law office or government setting after passing the bar. The Attorney III Juris Doctorate At least four (4) years of paid post-JD legal practice experience, i.e., served as an attorney in a law office or government setting after passing the bar.
