General Function:

The Senior Database Reliability Engineer will play a critical role in ensuring the reliability, performance, and scalability of our database systems. This role involves working closely with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and maintain robust database solutions. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in database administration, performance tuning, and reliability engineering.

Reporting Relations:

Accountable and Reports to: Director, Cloud Engineering

Direct Reports: None

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Manages and maintains Cloud SQL(Postgres/MySQL/SQL Server) clusters on Google Cloud Sets up high availability (HA), disaster recovery (DR), backups, and point-in-time recovery (PITR) for our databases, ensuring we meet our SLAs Works closely with Engineering to understand the application architecture, its components, and how they map to the underlying database schemas Works on database observability by proactively monitoring trends over time to detect patterns and diagnose complex production issues. This includes improving indexes, schema design, and optimizing application queries that could impact performance Participates in on-call rotation to handle critical database incidents. Develop strategies to prevent future incidents and improve overall system reliability

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in CSE or a related technical discipline and 5 - 10 years of related work experience.

Physical Requirements:
  • Visual requirements include: ability to see detail at near range with or without correction.
  • Must be physically able to perform sedentary work: operating a computer, occasionally lifting or carrying objects of no more than 10 pounds, and occasionally standing or walking.
  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: meeting with customers, kneeling, reaching, handling, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
  • Commitment to the Hy-Vee Mission and a willingness to promote the values of the company.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Excellent communication, collaboration, and documentation skills
  • Ability to identify problems, develop and execute solutions.
  • Experience with Postgres preferred in one of the clouds (GCP/AWS)
  • Knowledge of database monitoring tools, including integration with Prometheus/Grafana
  • Have a mindset of automation using Python or Shell for database upgrades, patching, and monitoring


Working Conditions:

The duties for this position are performed in a general or remote office setting. There is weekly pressure to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks in a day.
