San Francisco, United States Hearst Communications, Inc. Full time

SFGATE Breaking News Editor Your Impact: Under the direction of SFGATE’s Deputy Managing Editor, the Breaking News Editor will lead SFGATE’s most timely coverage. They’ll understand the massive responsibility — and opportunity — we have to deliver news to residents of the Bay Area quickly and accurately. The Breaking News Editor will edit multiple stories in a day, and sometimes juggle several assignments at once. They’ll be able to prioritize which stories must publish first based on timeliness and audience opportunity, and meet the moment with speed and diligence in their own work. They will work together with SFGATE’s Breaking News Reporter, as well as other reporters on staff, to cover weather, traffic, crime and more every day, including writing stories of their own. They should also feel comfortable leading the newsroom through a major news moment, like an earthquake or wildfire. The hours for this position are 6:30 a.m.-3 p.m., though there may be times when news demands work outside of those hours. What you’ll do: Be a phenomenal editor — we need someone who can work well with writers with diverse journalism backgrounds and who can mentor young reporters on the foundations of newswriting. Be autonomous — this position comes with a lot of trust, to juggle multiple stories, to meet news moments, to communicate with the copy desk, homepage editors, photo department and illustrators. Be consistent — this editor will be tasked with directing SFGATE’s news coverage every day, including writing stories themselves in the mornings and making quick assignments to reporters throughout the day to ensure the site is reliable for our most dedicated readers. Be aware — we want an editor who can pick out the most impactful stories from an inundated news landscape, and who can pivot as needed in big news moments to make sure our coverage is comprehensive and quick. Who you are: You have 5+ years of relevant experience in news writing and editing at a publication or in a digital media environment. You have a deep knowledge of the Bay Area, and you have an equally deep understanding of what people here care about every single day. You have a passion for journalism and telling stories. You live in the San Francisco Bay Area or are willing to move here. You’ve read SFGATE and have an understanding of the brand and voice. In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in California. The reasonable estimate is between $90,000 and $95,000. Please note this information is specific to those hired in San Francisco. If this role is open to candidates outside of San Francisco, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education. #J-18808-Ljbffr
