Description
POSITION PURPOSE:
Performs various duties including venipunctures for collection of blood samples, clerical activities and assists in performing a few basic laboratory procedures in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures and regulatory agency requirements (FDA, AABB, CLIA, etc.) to achieve the best quality patient care.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Completed training in phlebotomy techniques
- Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred

1. Collects adequate blood samples for analysis to assist physicians in making accurate diagnosis and management of diseases.
- Greets patients and instructs them in proper specimen collection methods.
- Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.
- Draws blood specimens from patients by using finger stick, heel stick and/or venipuncture.
- Collects throat culture specimens and other specimens as needed.
- Labels specimens for identification purposes and enters specimen data into computer.
- Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, and disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.
- Prepares specimens for reference laboratory by using centrifuge to spin blood.
- Writes test results sent from reference laboratory into patient report; distributes to clinicians.
- Keeps work areas clean and orderly; washes laboratory glassware as needed.
- Handles infectious material to protect all laboratory personnel, collect blood and other specimens under aseptic conditions.
- Performs and records routine daily maintenance (including temperatures) on instruments, incubators, and refrigerators according to established policies as needed.
- Performs and records Quality Control data for the above instruments and document corrective actions to facilitate accuracy of clinical testing and reporting of patients results.
- Analyzes patient tests and enters results into Hospital Information System to generate reports for patients chart.
5. Participates in FCH committees, quality assurance, performance and quality improvement initiatives, and activities which support the facility and department operations.
6. Complies with the state and federal regulatory requirements related to the performance of FCH operations and requirements of the FCH Compliance Program. Including but not limited to:
- The Compliance Policy.
- Completes all mandatory on-line training annually and as assigned.
- All department and organization-wide policies.
- Considers the impact of regulations such as Critical Access Hospital requirements, along with Federal and State of Nebraska regulations and discusses concerns appropriately to ensure compliance.
