As a Manufacturing Failure Analysis Engineer at Boston Dynamics, you will identify causes of failure in our products to provide insight into how we can improve performance, quality, and reliability. Working closely with test, quality, manufacturing, and design engineers, you will understand the circumstances of failures, perform hands-on inspection and test of electronic and mechanical components/assemblies, and provide detailed and summary-level documentation to the larger team.Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. Now we are quickly becoming a recognized leader in automation solutions for industrial applications, logistics and warehouses. Day to day activities:Ensure contemporaneous documentation of failures on the manufacturing line and at our internal test facilities by rapidly responding to failures and capturing relevant dataReview, update, organize and report on failure tickets and metricsWork with test engineers, technicians, and design engineers to tear down and inspect failed robots and subassembliesReview and understand product specifications, component datasheets, block diagrams, electrical schematics, and mechanical drawings as needed to identify causes of failureUse tools and test equipment to identify and document failed componentsRecord failure analysis results in a databaseDesired skills:Significant experience in failure analysis of electromechanical systems as a design engineer, quality engineer, or service technicianExcellent technical communication skills for both in-depth analyses and high-level summariesWorking knowledge of motion control systems including motors, gearboxes, and sensorsWorking knowledge of mechanical components and design patternsWorking knowledge of engineering materials and their propertiesWorking knowledge of PCBAs, connectors, and cable assembliesNice to have skills:Experience using technical documentation and software logs to identify failuresExperience with structured problem solving frameworks like DMAIC, 8D, 5 Why, Ishikawa, et ceteraExperience or knowledge of warehouse operationsExperience in design or repair of industrial robotsWorking knowledge of machine vision principlesExperience with CAD software (CATIA preferred)Experience with Jira
