THIS IS A PERMANENT PART TIME POSITION THAT IS SCHEDULED 10 HOURS PER WEEK.

Under direct supervision, performs various clerical support duties to assist in the operation of the library. Incumbents' primary responsibilities include the checking in and shelving of books.

Scope of Responsibility :
Responsible for accuracy and quality of own work.
  1. Returns books and materials to appropriate location and straightens books on shelves according to established procedures.
    1. Sorts materials by format, and call number or alphabetically;
    2. Places materials on book carts;
    3. Places materials in bins for branch libraries;
    4. Places materials in correct location shelving.
  2. Discharges (checks in) returned circulating materials.
    1. Retrieves materials from book drops;
    2. Prints out holds and sets aside requested materials for hold shelves as items are checked in.
    3. Checks cases to ensure returned materials are enclosed (DVDs, CDs, etc.);
    4. Inspects returned items for damage and notifies appropriate staff;
    5. Performs cleaning of items as necessary.
  3. Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.
    1. Frequently interacts with others in the work unit, the public, or across departments to exchange basic fact information as requested or as necessary to perform job duties;
    2. Occasionally interacts with others in the work unit, the public, or across departments to exchange detailed and/or technical information where the ability to explain concepts is exercised.
  4. Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
    1. Knows and follows department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss;
    2. Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work;
    3. When potentially unsafe conditions are observed, makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable and draws them to the attention of the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.
  5. Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
Must be 16 years of age with basic literacy sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Knowledge, skills and abilities include:
  • Knowledge of basic library practices and procedures including alphabetizing and the Dewey Decimal Classification System;
  • Skill in basic computer terminal operation sufficient to enter and retrieve information;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms, and strong customer service skills.
Daily work involves frequent handling, scanning, lifting, carrying, and moving of library materials, book return bins, tubs, book carts, and hand trucks. The work requires frequent moving between rooms. There is precise attention to detail.

Activities include stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, digital dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Physical demands are normally those associated with medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly.
