Job Overview The Vice President of Engineering is a strategic leader responsible for guiding and developing the engineering team to achieve technical excellence and innovation. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, contributing to the company's technical vision and strategy, and ensuring projects align with business objectives. The role reports to the CTO at VRChat and will work closely with various stakeholders on the executive leadership team, the producers, and engineers building the VRChat product and periodically interact with the VRChat Board as well.

Overall, the VP of Engineering plays a pivotal role in shaping the engineering function, managing resources, and delivering high-quality products while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, compliance, and financial success.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Development

Lead and mentor the engineering team, ensuring a culture of continuous improvement and high performance. Develop and nurture a skilled team through recruitment, training, and career growth opportunities. Strategic Planning and Execution

Co-develop the technical vision and strategy with the CTO. Deliver on the engineering strategy, ensuring teams meet their strategic goals and contribute to the product vision.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Collaborate with product, design, business, security and production teams to bring products to market. Advocate for engineering teams, ensuring their work aligns with business objectives and maintaining strong cross-functional relationships.

Reporting and Communication

Report to the CTO, board, and stakeholders on the state of the engineering organization with meaningful metrics. Ensure clear and healthy communication during organizational changes or major reorganizations.

Technical Excellence and Innovation

Recommend technological developments and improvements to enhance efficiency. Help drive product roadmap and initiatives, participate in technical design, and resolve systemic issues with short, medium, and long-term solutions.

Compliance and Safety

Practice and ensure compliance with safety standards at all times. Ensure work tasks and projects adhere to local, state, and federal codes.

Overall Engineering Function

Oversee the fulfillment of the product vision, manage project schedules and resources, and ensure reliable equipment supply. Provide leadership and direction for the engineering team, working collaboratively with other departments to meet customer expectations.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

A Bachelor's or Graduate's Degree in information systems, engineering, computer science, or electrical engineering, with a preference for candidates holding a Master's degree or MBA focused on leadership and management. A minimum of 10 years of experience in engineering management A demonstrated success in scaling organizations and managing high-performing development teams. Proven experience in software design, recruitment of engineers, and excellent technical knowledge are crucial. Strong organizational leadership skills, including effective budget management. Soft skills such as communication, organizational, analytical, and leadership abilities are essential. Experience with software development in Unity and integration of cloud services like those provided by AWS and Photon. The ability to handle sensitive matters with tact and diplomacy, collaborate within a team, and motivate and inspire teams are also emphasized.
