Mechanical Engineer COOP- Cal State San Marcos

DescriptionUltra Communications Inc. - A Samtec Company is seeking an Engineering Co-op in our Vista, CA location. Please only apply if you are a student currently enrolled and pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field at a local University in San Diego County. The schedule would be a minimum of twenty hours per week during school. Hours may vary but are flexible between 8AM-5PM, Monday-Friday. Pay is $24-27.00 per hour, depending on education and experience level. Undergraduate COOPs are eligible to participate in student program tuition assistance and may also opt to participate in Samtec's 401k plan. UCI Mechanical Engineers are responsible for creating 3D solid models of product designs, production drawings, building Bills of Materials (BOMs), and releasing prototype and production items in PLM. COOP will have the opportunity to develop skills in statistical data analysis, microelectronics manufacturing processes, failure root cause analysis, work on design of tooling and 3D printing projects. Ideal candidates are self-starters who demonstrate exemplary written and verbal communication skills. They excel in a dynamic environment and can problem solve, efficiently, creatively, and with fine attention to detail. Below is a list of preferred qualifications and skills: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Student pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering or related field. Availability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week during regular business hours while maintaining a full-time course load. You must be available to commit to a minimum of 3 semesters, 12-14 months. COOPs are required to maintain a C grade or above in all courses to maintain status in the program.Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. "The responsibilities as defined are intended to serve as a general guideline for this position. Associates may be asked to perform additional tasks depending on strengths and capabilities." Objectives: Use SolidWorks to create mechanical models of assemblies and componentsUnderstand how Product Data Management (PDM) is used to store 3D modelsLearn what a PLM system is and how it enables the development and production of productsLearn how to create engineering documents and marketing literature documenting mechanical design and product performanceUnderstand how mechanical engineering works with electrical engineers, software engineers, and program management to achieve company objectivesLearn how to deliver products through a phase-gate design processLearn how to prepare product designs for prototype and volume manufacturingUnderstand the role of control plans in product design.Work schedule: Full time COOP: 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday - FridayPart time COOP: Flexible 20 hours per week 8 AM - 5 PM, Monday - Friday Equipment & Systems used: Outlook / Excel / Word / Teams / ZoomEngineering Change Orders (ECOs)Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)Salesforce / PropelPTSSolidworksPDMSkills learned: Using above softwareCommunicating with project teams, electrical engineers, software engineers, marketing, and manufacturingMechanical Design of opto-electrical transceiver productsDesigning variants to meet schedule and ensure the final design passes environmental requirements.Support test engineering and operations in release of mechanical designs of peripherals, tooling, fixtures, and shipping packaging.Preferred skills: Basic computer skillsUndergraduate course workExperience with SolidWorks or other 3D modeling tool (ProEngineer)Experience with thermal analysis and thermal analysis tools (Windchill, Flotherm, etc...)
