***This position can be hired as either an Engineer III or one level higher as a Sr. Engineer depending on experience***

Job Summary

Engineer III - this is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

Senior Engineer - this is the career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions and take actions to resolve. Senior Engineer represents a level at which career may stabilize for many years.

This position is responsible for Transmission Tie, Retail and Customer Substation design. This includes drawing package development, bill of material creation, production standard implementation, consultant management and oversight, and providing support during construction in addition to other associated activities. This person may review internal and external designs for quality assurance and serve as a liaison to external design consultant firms. This position will require interfacing with multiple departments to meet project objectives. The ability to handle multiple requests simultaneously is key so project objectives and deadlines are met.

With Minimal Supervision:
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
  • Coaches and mentors junior Engineers and other Engineering personnel.
Basic Qualifications

Engineer III
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • 4 years of minimum required related experience
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Senior Engineer
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Highly desired - familiarity with the following programs:
  • Electronic Document Management Systems, i.e. Fusion
  • Maximo
  • TIM (Transmission Integration Manager)
  • AutoCAD, ACADE
Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in the electric utility industry.
  • Substation design experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide diversity of personnel with varying technical backgrounds including engineers, vendors, craft, and management.
  • Ability to take verbal and written conceptual information from engineers and technical employees in order to develop detailed designs with all necessary documentation.
  • Ability to complete assignments within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work.
  • Proficient in applying principles of project management
  • Good general computer skills including Windows, Outlook , and other Microsoft Office products (Word and Excel).

Working Conditions

Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.
