This is a highly visible leadership position within the practice and collaborates closely with the practice Chief Medical Officer, Nursing Director and Senior Leadership to continue Ironwood’s value based development. The Pharmacy Director is responsible for the Pharmacy Department consisting of clinical pharmacists, Supervising Pharmacy technicians, an in-office-dispensary team, and ad-mixture pharmacy technicians.

Overview Ironwood Cancer & Research Centers has a robust metro-Phoenix footprint consisting of 15 locations including 6 comprehensive cancer centers, a multi-specialty network of medical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists, breast surgeons and urologists, a robust Integrative Services program, dedicated research department, and a growing women’s oncology program.

Position Summary Responsible for daily operation of the pharmacy department, personnel management, regulatory & compliance pharmacy services, including the in-office dispensary for all facilities. This position establishes effective working relationships with all constituencies including patients, physicians, employees, and vendors. Performs job duties and responsibilities in compliance with company policies and procedures. Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities Provide specialized oncology related pharmaceutical services to improve drug usage and therapeutic outcomes including advising physicians on issues concerning drug therapy, the inherent toxicity of drugs and side effects, as well as assisting in the prescription of appropriate doses. Ability to perform and train staff on IV and Chemotherapy preparation. Acts as a resource for Research department as needed. Direct oversight of pharmacy inventories. Direct supervision for overall quality, aseptic techniques, mixing/compounding concentrations for chemotherapeutic drugs. Overall responsibility for Compliance and Regulations. Remain up to date on current compliance and regulatory guidelines, USP797/800, OSHA, HIPAA, QOPI, and all Federal, State, and Local Laws. Responsible for the activities of assigned IV admixture technicians engaged in the preparation, labeling and delivery of medications and other pharmaceutical supplies and in accordance with physicians' prescriptions. Maintain liaison relationships with medical, nursing, including all clinical staff, and provides education/training related to pharmacy, chemotherapy, oncology and hematology treatments. Provide timely reports pertaining to pharmaceutical supplies, drug treatments, in-office dispensary (IOD), and staffing. Conduct and evaluate medication histories, assess compliance and suggest modifications so as to achieve desired outcomes. Monitor efficacy, side effects and clinical outcomes of medications and advises providers as indicated. Work with providers on decision-making treatment options when appropriate. Contribute to the success of established performance measures and cost-savings initiatives related to pharmacy practice. Maintain professional competency by keeping abreast of current medical and pharmaceutical literature, new drugs and therapies, and applies this knowledge in daily practice. Review, process, and dispense medication orders electronically after establishing appropriateness of drug choice, dosage, administration route and quantity in a timely manner. Participate in required Drug Review(s). Must be able to type and work on a computer, OncoEMR, and Lynx. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. Performs other duties as requested by supervisor, administrator, or physicians.

Pharmaceutical (Oral) Responsibilities Reviews patient medication history for allergies and drug interactions including the processes of drug procurement, dispensing, monitoring, as well as the provision of drug information to the associated professional staff. Ensure proper labeling and packaging in compliance with federal laws and regulations. Advised patients when called upon on use of medications including dosage, administration schedules, and side effects. Review/monitor patient medication profiles for compliance and potential problems. Assures the accurate and timely dispensing and distribution of all pharmaceuticals. Resolve drug related reactions and shortage as they arise.

Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of and understanding of aseptic techniques and procedures and ability to demonstrate such. Knowledge of pharmaceutical and related medical terminology. Knowledge of metric and apothecary systems of weight and measurements. Knowledge of medical safety standards to assist in manufacturing and working with pharmaceutical substances. Knowledge of medications and the dispensing function to check for correctness. Ability to read and interpret prescription information. Proficient mathematical skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Internet. Ability to use office equipment and computer. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Metro-Phoenix travel is required.

Education And/or Experience PharmD Degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy. Minimum 7 years Pharmacist experience (may include PG1 and PG2 residencies). 5 years Pharmacy progressive leadership experience (multi-site experience preferred). Previous experience in a hospital or freestanding cancer center facility. Experience with oral chemotherapeutics a plus.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Current Arizona State Board of Pharmacy, Pharmacist license is in good standing (or able to obtain AZ license before hire). BCOP is a preferred.
