Position Type: Support Staff/Substitute Custodian Date Posted: 4/1/2023 Location: Substitute Staff Closing Date: Untill Filled Job Summary The custodian shall provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop. Essential Job Functions Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean at all times. Reports to work on time. Shovels, plows, and sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as appropriate. Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy. Sweeps or vacuums classrooms daily and dusts furniture. Keeps the grounds free from rubbish. Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the day when their condition requires it. Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily. Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary. Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste. Performs such yard keeping chores as grass cutting and tree trimming as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition. Reports major repairs needed promptly to the head custodian. Reports immediately to the principal and head custodian any emergency or danger to school property. Remains on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and extended work hours have been approved. Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off. Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by the Principal and/or Superintendent. Education and Experience: High school graduate or G.E.D. Must possess a valid driver's license. Knowledge: Knowledge of the practices, policies, and procedures of the school district. Extensive knowledge of the practices, procedures, materials and supplies used for maintenance. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of cleaning. Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in custodial work. Skills/Effort: Ability to complete work requiring constant attention. Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written directions. Ability to operate and/or utilize most equipment/materials such as saws, drill presses, routers, sanders, etc. Skill in performing preventive maintenance, installation, and repair operations incidental to regular duties and/or areas of assignment. Skill in the use of standard tools. Skill in reading, math and applying plans, specifications. Ability to communicate effectively with immediate supervisor, staff, and other groups and individuals involved in daily activities. Working Conditions: Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors with exposure to discomforting environmental conditions such as heat, cold, humidity, dusts, wetness and heights. Physical demands include heavy physical effort (lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.). Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing, walking, pushing/pulling or moving/lifting heavy equipment or supplies is required. Manual dexterity and mobility, and considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching is necessary. Routine local travel required. Work requires the operation of maintenance equipment, machinery and tools, and involves requiring attention.
