Job Description:
As an Optical Engineer II, you will play a pivotal role in our team. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to design, build, integrate, and evaluate hardware platforms essential for conducting applied perception science studies and demonstrations.
Responsibilities:
Collaborate closely with applied perception scientists, mechanical engineers, optical engineers, thermal engineers, electrical engineers, firmware/software engineers, and safety specialists to define and specify hardware platforms tailored to the requirements of applied perception science studies.
Undertake optical design, build, integration, and evaluation of AR/VR-related platforms to facilitate applied perception science studies.
Manage vendors involved in the delivery of opto-mechanical sub-assemblies, ensuring quality and timely delivery.
Operate developed hardware platforms and conduct various optical tests, including MTF (Modulation Transfer Function), distortion, color, illumination, and VID (Visual Image Quality) tests.
Process and summarize data collected from hardware platforms to extract meaningful insights and inform further iterations.
Utilize hardware automation techniques, primarily using Python or other scripting languages, to streamline testing processes.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of optical fundamentals and apply this knowledge effectively in design and testing tasks.
Utilize optical design software such as Zemax, Code V, LightTools, and FRED to facilitate optical system design and analysis.
Must-Have skillset:
Proficiency in optical design and analysis.
Experience with optical testing, alignment, and integration.
Competency in data processing techniques.
Strong background in hardware automation using Python or similar scripting languages.
Demonstrated expertise in optical fundamentals.
Familiarity with optical design software such as Zemax, Code V, LightTools, and FRED.
Projects to Work On:
Sub-component design for a DMD projector, involving component and system-level optical integration and testing.
Design and testing for a VR headset, focusing on optical system integration and testing.
Conducting MTF, distortion, color, and illumination tests for test platforms, including operating the Gamma Scientific NED.
Setting up tests, including haploscopes, and running laser safety-related tests.
