POSITION SUMMARY: HSE & Compliance Engineer

Vanderlande's Engineering Department is responsible for the design, specification, and commissioning of material handling systems for our customers.

The Regulatory Compliance Engineer is an SME in regulatory and product compliance and mechanical and electrical safety. In this position, you will work in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative & customer-focused environment to act as an SME for product-level compliance with regulatory body standards to support various teams during product design/development, product application reviews, and project system design reviews.

This position will work within the HSE NA team, manage all compliance requests from all stakeholders specific to the NA Customer Centre, and will report directly to the Senior HSE Program Manager for the North America Customer Centre. We would prefer the candidates to be in the Atlanta, GA area as the position is a Hybrid role.

Essential Functions (Job Duties and Responsibilities):
  • Become intimately familiar with applicable regulatory body standards. Including, but not limited to, ANSI, UL, NFPA, ASME, OSHA, etc.
  • Become intimately familiar with the electromechanical and, to a lesser extent, mechanical operation of Vanderlande equipment.
  • Become familiar with major Warehouse Solutions key accounts and their differing requirements for equipment and equipment application.
  • Support Project Engineering to resolve product compliance issues.
  • Manage safety cases through the entire life cycle and drive to closed-loop corrective action.
  • Update and guide management and cross-functional teams as required, obtaining internal approvals and clearance on content.
  • Provide R&D teams with relevant product compliance information as input to product developments and/or revisions.
  • Support the Vanderlande HSE team with product compliance information and interpretation.
  • Identify regulatory bodies and standards that Vanderlande equipment must comply with.
  • Manage subscriptions, licenses, and access to regulatory body standards. This includes periodic reviews of subscriptions and licenses to identify cost-reduction opportunities.
  • Ensure the latest revision of all applicable standards is identified and obtained.
  • Read and interpret standards to be able to answer product compliance questions and defend compliant product designs if challenged.
  • Perform product compliance design reviews and create/update gap analysis to provide direction to R&D.
  • Create product compliance documentation including, but not limited to HSRA, product development guides, test & evaluation procedures, etc.
  • Support Vanderlande project and product design safety initiatives - risk assessment process, functional safety, development of safety requirement specifications, emergent issues (products), and compliance issues and matters.
  • Develop and complete industrial and design risk assessments and evaluations by ISO12100 and ANSI B11 practices.
  • Attend product development/design reviews to provide product compliance support.
  • Identify & maintain tools and equipment required for compliance testing & evaluation including, but not limited to, calibration, maintenance & upkeep, usage logging, etc.
  • Attend regulatory body meetings to formulate new standards and/or maintain existing standards to represent Vanderlande.
Required Qualifications, Education, and Experience:
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, safety engineering, electrical engineering technology, mechatronics, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in electrical product design, inspection, electrical project engineering or systems engineering, and/or product level HSE or compliance roles in the material handling or related industry.
  • Project Management Certification (PMP) is preferred, but not required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • In-depth understanding of material handling system (specifically conveyor system) design and operation.
  • Understanding of industrial electrical wiring codes, concepts, and practices.
  • Understanding of OSHA requirements.
  • Understanding of CE standards, machinery directive & compliance environment
  • Understanding of industrial electrical system design & operation
  • Understanding of industrial electrical component functionality & selection criteria
    • Motors, VFDs, circuit breakers, power supplies, switches, sensors, etc.

  • Capable of effective time management & scheduling

  • Proficient with computer applications (e-mail, internet, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, etc.))
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks, and AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of the metric and imperial measurement systems
  • Knowledge of reading & understanding technical drawings and electrical schematics
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and their applications.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Position Type:

This is a full-time, hybrid, and benefit-eligible position.

Travel:

This position may require travel up to 20% travel, including international.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has supervisory responsibilities.

  • Ability to inspect a large construction/installation project on several floors.
  • Use of fall-protection equipment

  • To talk and hear.
  • Sit or stand in front of a computer in a stationary position for much of the workday.
  • Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing during site visits.
  • Occasionally move about inside the office to access office machinery (printers, etc.)
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
