Job Title: Phlebotomist I MontgomeryJob Description

Summary: The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

+ Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and perform decontamination.

+ Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures.

+ Explain clearly and courteously the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.

+ Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.

+ Fully understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.

+ Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.

+ Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure 100% accuracy.

+ Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples according to required temperatures.

+ Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow different procedures outlined by specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity.

+ Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.

+ Attend annual department training sessions.

+ Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

+ Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required.

+ Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.

+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

+ High School Diploma or GED.

+ 0-2 years of experience in phlebotomy.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

+ Phlebotomy certification

+ Experience in pediatric and geriatric phlebotomy

+ Strong customer service skills

+ Good hygiene and clean-cut appearance

+ Experience with laboratory equipment such as centrifuges

+ Ability to handle 60-90 blood draws daily, with 15-20 per person.

Work Environment

This role is based in a Patient Service Center (PSC). The location accommodates a team of two full-time and two part-time employees. The work environment includes chairs in the processing area, minimizing the need for prolonged standing. The role involves working Monday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Initial training spans 3-4 days and focuses mainly on administrative tasks. The role encompasses working with patients across various age groups, from infants to geriatrics.
