Description

SAIC is currently hiring for a Cross-Cutting Computational Lead/Research Scientist to join the PET5 program supporting the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP). This position is contingent upon award.

The HPCMP operates 5 DoD Supercomputing Resource Centers (DSRC) in 5 unique locations. This position would be co-located at one of the 5 sites or 100% remote, based on Computational Focus Area and the chosen candidate's background. The 5 sites are: Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) DSRC in WPAFB, OH, Army Research Lab (ARL) DSRC in Aberdeen, MD, Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) in Vicksburg, MS, Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC) DSRC in Maui, HI, and Navy DSRC at Stennis Space Center, MS.

SAIC is looking for a High-End computing SME and computational researcher who can lead a small team of Computational Research Scientists and work hand-in-hand with the DoD's brightest scientists and engineers to solve mission critical, complex problems. This initiative will support the PET5 (User Productivity Enhancement and Training) program within the HPCMP. As a research scientist for SAIC supporting this customer, you will be working on leveraging Top500 supercomputing assets and collaborating with the world's top research and HPC scientists and engineers to better understand customer technology, requirements, and the future needs of the DoD.

The HPCMP PET team was created over 25 years ago to provide EXPERT computational support for users of the supercomputing systems across the DoD branches and DSRCs.The team serves as a "Tier 3" customer-facing presence for the DoD science and technology community, providing SME advice for new initiatives, ongoing projects, and support needs.

The positions available are remote but some travel to the DSRCs is required. We prefer candidates within a short (50 miles or less) commute to one of the DSRCs and the selected candidate must match the core hours of the DSRC in closest proximity to their location. Travel will be infrequent, mostly to support National conferences, customer requirements, or meetings within the High-End Computing space.

Job Duties:

•Lead a team of 3-5 research scientists within your area of Computational expertise (CFD, CCM, CSM, CEA, etc.) and be the single Point of Contact for reporting project and research results within that area to the PET5 Program Director.

•Engage in scientific collaborations and also the data science and engineering communities to help improve the state-of-the-art in data toolkits and techniques for scientific and engineering applications.

•Leverage a current knowledge of HPC and engage with the HPC community to build on your understanding of HPC needs (both current and future). As technology advances, stay current with new technology solutions and optimizations in HPC.

•Participate and engage in existing and planned scientific research across the DoD and within your supported DSRC.

•Apply technologies to solve HPC-related data problems and to develop innovative big data solutions.

•Keep abreast of developments in the high-performance computing field, writing technical reports, conference and journal papers as appropriate, review scientific papers and proposals as appropriate.

•Assist in unit testing, integration testing and functional testing of software (as required).

•Help install, test and debug software packages and tools on the supercomputers (as required).

•Represent SAIC and the HPCMP in meetings and conferences by presenting papers, slides and posters.

•Drive and support the exploration and innovation of new technologies and capabilities relevant to HPC computing.

•Collaborate with your Government customer, DoD researchers, the PET5 team and other technical teams within the HPCMP to evaluate projects and tools for future implementation.

•Serve as a customer interface for day-to-day activities supporting your Cross-Cutting Computational area.

•Act as an active member of the program, leading and solving technical projects on HPC systems.

•Occasionally present to senior leadership on HPC best practices, share lessons learned and solutions, new technologies, and ways you approached and solved challenging technical issues.

•Process and analyze data and participate in the overall operations and success of HPCMP projects.

•Collaborate with research groups in the pursuit of common missions, vision, values and mutual goals.

•Engage the data science community to improve the capability and performance of data science software.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

•PhD and eight (8) years of experience required.

Required Security Clearance:

•Secret security clearance required.

Required Skills:

•Experience in High-End computing within the DoD, NASA, NOAA, IC, or University settings. Experience working with real world, Physics-based or data science applications.

•Experience in documenting projects, research effort and codes.

•Strong verbal and written communication skills.

•Effective at communicating with audiences whose technical backgrounds vary widely.

Preferred Skills:

•Experience with large and complex data sets. Experience with high-performance computing using distributed computing and/or cloud technologies.

•Strong software engineering skills and a track record of contributing to software projects and collaborating with other developers.

•Experience working on technology projects, which includes requirements gathering, documentation, meeting the schedule on time, transparency in results and status and managing customer expectations.

•Familiarity with commonly used HPC applications and services (i.e., SLURM schedulers, high performance file systems, such as Lustre or SpectrumScale, modules for installing applications, compilers, MPI, OpenMP, profiling tools)

•Background in physics-based computation, such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD); computational structural mechanics (CSM); computational electromagnetics and acoustics (CEA) is beneficial.

•Working knowledge of the Linux operating system, a programming or data analysis language (e.g., Python, C, C++, etc.), and data access languages (e.g., MySQL, Oracle, NoSQL).

•Ability to work both independently and as a team member.

•Ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines, and an eagerness to take ownership of challenging and open-ended assignments.

SAIC accepts applications on an ongoing basis and there is no deadline.
