POSITION SUMMARY:
The Swim Instructor creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe program conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas.
A swim instructor provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students and families in group, private, and semi-private swim lessons.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 15 years of age
- Current lifeguard certification
- Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Oxygen certifications within the first 30 days of hire
- Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with Y standards
- YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent experience
- Maintain CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
- Swim Instructor Certification
- Maintain YMCA Lifeguard Certification every 2 years
- Maintain First Aid and Administering
- Bloodborne Pathogens/Child Abuse Prevention every year
- Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with Y guidelines, and prepares lesson plans accordingly
- Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the Y.
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
- Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
- Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Follows all Y policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
- Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
- Influence: Employs influence strategies that engage, inspire, and build commitment to position and overall Y goals
- Communication: Listens and expresses ideas effectively and in a manner that reflects a true understanding of the needs of the audience
- Decision Making: Integrates logic, intuition, and sound judgment to analyze information to identify greatest opportunities, make sound decisions, and solve problems
- Emotional Maturity: Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
- Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
- Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR, Oxygen and First Aid effectively.
- Physically able to see, hear, and communicate clearly and be able to hear noises and distress signals in aquatic environment.
- Must be able to communicate clearly with members and staff using Listen First skills.
