Job Summary The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic, assigned to the Energy and Utilities unit, works independently or as a team member under the supervision of the Utilities Operations Supervisor. The incumbent is a skilled generalist utilizing journey-level skills in mechanical or plumbing trades, along with other trade skills, to perform preventive and general maintenance, repair, construction, and renovation work on utility infrastructure systems. These include high and low-pressure steam heating, chilled water loops, storm drainage, sanitary sewer networks, water distribution, irrigation, fire hydrants, and low-voltage fire alarm/security networks. The incumbent uses a computerized maintenance system to ensure preventive maintenance. Key Responsibilities Perform at a journey level in trades such as pipefitting, electrical, plumbing, and utility maintenance, assisting with both basic and advanced work. Conduct preventive and routine maintenance tasks. Analyze and troubleshoot problems across multiple trades and perform repairs independently. Prepare standard reports and estimate costs, time, and materials for work. Use computers for communication, research, documentation, and record-keeping. Inspect completed work for compliance with standards, codes, and manufacturer recommendations. Operate utility vehicles and equipment such as welding tools, scissor lifts, and forklifts, as certified. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in skilled trades. Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes. Ability to read blueprints, interpret plans, and work from specifications. Effective communication skills and ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups. Initiative in planning, organizing, and executing work. Ability to respond to emergency situations and adapt to changing priorities. Customer service orientation. Minimum Qualifications Four years of progressive experience in facility repair and maintenance, demonstrating journey-level skills, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Valid California Driver's License and ability to operate required vehicles and equipment. Participation in OSHA-required physicals and examinations. Preferred Qualifications High School diploma and certification from an apprenticeship program. Journey-level status in mechanical or plumbing trades. Knowledge of mechanical and plumbing systems, including automation and building controls. Five years of journey-level experience in maintenance, repair, or construction of relevant systems.
