Full-time Custodian

Hours: Full-time 40 hours

Starting Pay: $15.00

Must be available to work early morning shifts; which includes some Saturdays.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Custodian is responsible for sustaining and maintaining the library and its facilities through regular cleaning activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In cooperation with the Custodial Supervisor, Facilities & Maintenance Team, and other colleagues, the Custodian will advance the library's mission, vision, strategic priorities, and brand. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Actively sweep, mop, dust mop, and vacuum floors, entrance rugs.
  • Frequently empty trash and recycling bins from buildings, remove materials to recycling site, and collect and remove trash from buildings and grounds.
  • Regularly clean floors, walls, lavatories, fixtures, and toilets, and refill bathroom supplies.
  • Regularly clean Annex/Clinic rooms.
  • Clean the grounds and water and feed trees.
  • Dust, wipe, and sanitize furniture and surfaces including windowsills and blinds.
  • Clean windows, doors, and elevator doors.
  • Clean and sanitize counters and tables in the eating area, load and unload the dishwasher, and arrange dishware.
  • Perform light maintenance such as minor repairs, light bulb replacement, moving furniture, and changing or handing signs, banners and flags as assigned.
  • Accept, unload, and deliver materials as received.
  • Maintain cleanliness of library vehicles and refuel vehicles as needed.
  • Assist Library Courier by efficiently picking up, loading, unloading, and distributing library materials and supplies at Central library and library locations as assigned by Facilities & Maintenance leadership.
  • Assist with setting up and tearing down of meeting rooms.
  • Perform snow removal and other inclement weather activities.
  • Consistently maintain basic janitorial supplies by using a predetermined list to communicate to the Custodial Supervisor.
  • Participate in special projects, or other duties, as assigned.
Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 1+ years' experience working with commercial cleaning equipment.
  • 1+ years' experience working with standard janitorial or maintenance equipment such as floor lifts, leaf blowers, snow blowers, forklifts, vacuum cleaners (standard and riding), steam machines, buffers, carpet cleaners, power washers, standard hand tools, etc.
  • Must have reliable and timely transportation to and from work.
  • Must be able to exert up to 25 pounds of force regularly, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 100 pounds of force occasionally to move and/or lift objects.
Preferred:
  • 1+ years' experience working with cleaning chemicals.
  • 1+ years' experience in a public library setting.
  • An ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Work frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, and lifting. Work occasionally requires speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, and tasting or smelling. This position has standard vision requirements. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities. Work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration, and exposure to blood borne pathogens. This position may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
