Job Description & Summary

BMSS Advisors & CPAs is looking for an experienced Senior Accountant who values cultivating relationships to join our GovCon team. BMSS was established in Birmingham in 1991 and has grown to become a top 100 advisory and CPA firm in the U.S. We have four locations in Alabama (Hoover, Downtown Birmingham, Gadsden, Huntsville) as well as one in Mississippi (Ridgeland). We would prefer this candidate to be located near the Huntsville office.

Our services include tax planning, compliance and assurance, merger, and acquisition, advisory, wealth management, accounting services, payroll, and IT Support. BMSS strives to give all clients "peace of mind" and believes in exceptional client experience.

What you'll be doing:

The Senior Accountant role is responsible for organizing and managing client assignments and projects with minimal supervision as well as coaching peers in professional development expectations. Applicants should have a bachelor's or master's degree, their CPA credential, and at least three years of accounting experience.

Skills needed to be successful:

Required:
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Suite of Products (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience using accounting software - QuickBooks, Unanet, Deltek Costpoint, JAMIS, etc.
Desired:
  • Solid understanding of Government Contract Accounting in compliance with FAR/DCAA standards
  • Solid understanding and experience calculating indirect rates
Responsibilities:
  • Basic month/year end closure.
  • Creation of indirect rate schedule.
  • Creation of tax package for tax preparation.
  • Incurred Cost Submission preparation.
  • Training staff accountants in line with their job responsibilities.
  • Builds and maintains a strong rapport with staff.
  • Guides and motivates learning through mentoring and training.
  • Develops technical skills both on the job and through formal learning channels.
  • Effectively communicates with clients.
  • Applies technical knowledge and research in formulating client-related recommendations.
  • Develops an understanding of client businesses and uses this knowledge to help diagnose needs/opportunities and suggest solutions.
