Senior Mechanical Analyst

Job Description:
Our client is seeking a Senior Mechanical Analyst to join our Hardware Engineering team in Indianapolis, IN supporting the development of advanced airborne systems including podded communication link and sensor systems, airborne armament equipment, alternate mission equipment, cockpit displays, avionics, and radar systems.
Our Indianapolis facility also supports a variety of other product lines serving multiple Department of Defense (DoD) customers providing the opportunity to work on a diverse set of programs and roles supporting the continued advancement of your career.
The candidate will be responsible for oversight of hardware mechanical analysis as either an individual contributor or a lead.

Job Responsibilities:
The Senior Mechanical Analyst is responsible for detailed Thermal and Structural Analysis to support all phases of programs including development and production of mechanical systems for military environments, with a focus on avionics and armament products.
The Mechanical Analyses will cover a wide range of difficult problems, requiring solutions that are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organizational objectives.
The analysis tasks will span the spectrum from classical hand analyses to detailed analyses requiring the use of finite element analysis software.
As a Mechanical Analyst, you will work under general direction and will be expected to define the scope and level of analysis required to meet required objectives and will be held accountable for completing the work within the agreed-upon cost and schedule.
Additionally, you will be expected to present your work for peer review and to be a peer reviewer for other engineers work.
The customers of this position will include internal Vertex personnel and programs as well as external customer personnel and programs.
You will work with the customer and engineering leadership to define the testing required to validate thermal analyses and to verify that hardware is compliant with requirements.
In addition, you are expected to plan and support tests, perform data reduction, and engage in model correlation.

Required Skills:
Understanding of heat transfer: Conduction, Convection, Radiation
Understanding of structural analysis concepts: Stress/strain, linear/non-linear, static and dynamic analysis, structural fatigue, fracture and damage tolerance, bolted joints, etc.
Structural analysis experience, especially in military or aerospace environments
Experience with mechanical testing: planning, organization, instrumentation, execution, data reduction and correlation
Experience performing Finite modeling using ANSYS, ANSYS IcePak, FloTHERM, or equivalent software
Expertise in performing hand calculations based on fundamental equations
Applied work experience managing part of a development project
Experience with military or aerospace temperature environments (i.e. Mil-Std-810 or DO-160)
Ability to travel to government and other facilities in support of program activities
Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance
U.S. Citizenship status is required

Desired Skills:
Masters in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering
Current DoD Secret clearance
Electronics cooling/circuit card assembly component level thermal analyses
System Level and COTS integration thermal analyses
Understanding of electronic power: Power dissipated, power delivered, power modes, duty cycle, etc.
Aircraft structural design, electronics structural design, and/or avionics platform integration structural design
Aerodynamic heating analyses
CFD and fan flow analysis
Advanced thermal management solutions: Thermal Energy Storage (PCMs), Thermal Electric Coolers, Heat Pipes
Thermal stress/strain analyses
Experience with solid modeling CAD tools such as CREO or equivalent
Strong interpersonal skills working in a team environment with positive interaction
Excellent communication skills; both verbal and written

Education Requirements:
Bachelors Degree in Engineering, or related Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) degree program
A minimum of 5 years of related professional experience
