Medical Assistant Job DescriptionJob Title: Medical Assistant FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-ExemptDepartment: Clinical Back Office Approved Date: February 2016 Reports To: Office Manager/Office Lead SUMMARY:The Medical Assistant is responsible for patient care under the direction of a physician or other licensed health care provider. The Medical Assistant performs routine clinical and administrative tasks to assist medical providers with patient care and treatment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Clinical Duties:Prepare patients for examination by taking vitals, chief complaint, etc.Obtain medical histories and update Electronic Health RecordOrder labs, immunizations, diagnostic studies, etc. per protocolExplain treatment procedures to patientsAssist the provider during exams and surgical proceduresCollect and prepare lab specimensPerform basic lab tests, EKGs, treadmills, etc.Administer injections and immunization as directedKeep exam rooms stocked with adequate medical supplies, maintain instruments, prepare sterilization as requiredAdministrative Duties:Follow Athena clinical workflows for patient intake including quality managementPerform referrals and obtain insurance authorizationsCommunicate with patients via telephone and electronic mediaTake telephone messages and review patient cases with provider to give feedback and answers to patientsEnsure all related reports, labs and information is available in the patient's medical record prior to their examinationSchedule clinic appointments and maintain surgery schedulesMake arrangements for hospital admissionsDeliver patient instruction under the direction of the medical providerMaintain supplies and monitor inventoryCommunicate with pharmacies regarding prescription orders and refillsMaintain operations of medical equipment, follow operating instructions, call for repairs as neededMaintain all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, cold sterilization fluid, etc.)ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, a medical assistant must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Maintain a high level of confidentialityDocument work processes as requiredPersonal appearance and conduct must be professional at all timesEstablish and maintain effective working relationships with providers, staff and managementAbility to travel or float to other sites/locations on short notice.Comply with company policies and procedures, perform related work as requiredMaintain work area and exam roomsRequires adherence to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, attendance, punctuality and personal appearancePerform other duties as assignedQUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:High school diploma or GED, Medical Assistant certification, CPR certification recommended but not required.Medical terminologyKnowledge of the referral system, including using ICD-10 codes and CPT codesStrong organizational and interpersonal skillsKnowledge of medications and injection proceduresMust possess basic computer knowledge and skillsMust be able to recognize and respond appropriately to urgent/emergent situations per protocolsEffectively cope with typical job stressPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Must be able to use stethoscope and respond to verbal questions.Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone.Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of patient and reading information from printed sources and computer screens.Other: Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds unassisted, including assisting patients when required. Requires adequate physical ability including sufficient manual dexterity to perform the requisite health care service, including injections. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift. Requires exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.WORK ENVIRONMENT:Normal medical office environment.
