DIRECTOR OF NURSING SERVICES JOB DESCRIPTION SUPERVISOR: Administrator Assumes responsibility for the development of nursing service objectives, performance standards of nursing personnel, and nursing policies and procedures. Assumes accountability for development, organization and implementation of approved policies and procedures. Evaluate and supervise all resident care and initiate corrective action as necessary. Assess resident care needs and assist in the development of individualized plans of resident care. Assess resident needs and make recommendations for special rehabilitation programs. Evaluate resident care as related to individualized resident needs, family involvement and the physician’s plan of care for the resident. Supervises resident care conferences. Assess resident medication and treatments and make appropriate recommendations for nursing action to be implemented. Reports problems to the Administrator, conducts daily rounds and initiate corrective action as necessary. Identify safety hazards and initiate corrective action. Directs and implements nursing service educational programs including, but not limited to orientation and inservice for licensed and unlicensed personnel. Conducts staff meetings with all shifts for purposes of planning, coordination and implementing nursing service policies and procedures. Assess equipment and supply needs and make recommendations to the Administrator. Supervises scheduling of employees within established guidelines for adequate personnel on duty. Conduct interviews, hire nursing service employees, conduct counseling interviews and initiate disciplinary action as necessary with the approval of the administrator. Prepares written employee performance evaluations and initiate recommendations for salary increases, promotions or terminations. Takes disciplinary actions privately. Participates in local meetings (i.e.: hospitals, local facilities, case management, nursing home association, etc.) as necessary. Directs admission interviews and prescreening of residents by collecting data from admitting agency. Makes efforts to maintain resident’s level of care and to protect facility from all liabilities where ever possible. Establish open lines of communication with consultants and consistently take follow up action as is appropriate. Coordinate resident admission, transfers and discharges with community agencies and other facilities. Establish good public relations with hospital discharge coordinators and social service consultants and the community. Communicate daily with nursing personnel providing clear, concise information as well as specific assignments. Demonstrate responsibility, accountability, and dependability, serve as a role model for personnel. Wear clean neat uniforms and present a professional appearance at all times. Observe infection control procedures and direct staff in doing so. Be responsible for safety of residents. Observe resident rights policies. Keeps abreast of new rules and regulations for Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, as well as changes in nursing practices by attending meetings and visiting with colleagues. Fills in for Administrator during vacations/leaves of absence. In case of emergency where the Administrator is unable to perform duties, the DON would acquire a provisional Administrator’s license from the Iowa Board of Nursing Home Administrators and serve as Administrator of the facility and report to the board of directors monthly or more often as necessary. The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals would also be informed of this action.
