Primary Responsibilities
HDR is in search of a GIS Manager to join our Alaska Resources Business Group. The GIS Manager will represent, supervise, and mentor a highly successful local team of GIS professionals and geospatial developers, lead quality projects for a diversity of public- and private-sector clients, and work with other leaders across HDR to advance the technical and business applications of the geospatial practice.
The primary duties of the GIS Manager are to:
lead a team of GIS specialists and analysts with varying experience levels,
facilitate cross-market sector workflow,
promote the group's technical quality and support of client projects, and cultivate business development opportunities.
The Alaska GIS Manager will:
develop and maintain technical practices and standards;
coordinate appropriate quality reviews for all technical work in the Alaska GIS team;
mentor and advocate for professional development of individual team members;
support development of current and future project managers and leaders;
proactively address emerging trends;
communicate with Market Sector staff and clients about practice standards and trends;
communicate with leadership in local, regional, and national positions regarding technical developments and staffing needs;
identify technical training needs and opportunities for staff;
promote internal and external professional credentialing;
identify staffing needs and review and recommend potential new hires;
monitor and manage staff workloads and issues;
hold regular team meetings for technical and operational communication;
champion HDR policies and procedures, particularly QA/QC and best practices;
promote full performance feedback cycle with staff;
develop scope/schedule/budget for GIS tasks;
pursue opportunities for GIS services with project managers and with clients.
The successful candidate will be familiar with the suite of technical disciplines represented in the practice group (GIS, spatial analysis, database design). The successful candidate must have a commitment to excellent communication within the local GIS team, with the Business Group Leader, throughout the Alaska Area, and with the national Geospatial technical team. The GIS Manager will be expected to spend most of their time on project work, including project management, and is expected to win work and model excellent performance. As a leader, the successful candidate will display a strong interest in developing teams and supporting success at individual, team, and area levels.

Required Qualifications
Strong technical expertise in application of GIS in infrastructure development; evidence of growing expertise.
Minimum 8 years of experience managing GIS related proje ts or tasks.
Direct experience or solid understanding with ArcGIS for Server, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS for Desktop and extensions.
Must be a highly motivated self-starter with excellent writing, listening, leadership, and organizational skills.
Experience working independently and with a team.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Geospatial Science or related field preferred.
Previous consulting industry experience.
Familiarity with Alaska regulatory environment, Alaska markets, and public and private client groups.
Business development and marketing experience.
