Hours between 7am and 5pm Weekdays

The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) provides therapy programs: across acute hospital, swing bed, and outpatient environments for referred clients of all ages with developmental deficits, injury, illness, or disability in coordination with other health professionals. The SLP provides direct patient care including assessment, development of the plan of care, treatment, documentation, and patient education to clients of all ages. She/he directs patient participation, progression, and discharge in accordance with clinical best practice guidelines to restore, reinforce, and enhance patient performance. She/he facilitates the learning of skills and functions essential for improved communication and swallowing int order to maximize safety, and quality of life. The SLP is accountable to productivity and personal and professional growth. He/she should possess the skills to be adaptable to a dynamic team environment and open to the idea of developing, promoting, and performing new programs to facilitate rehabilitation. She/he is responsible for student supervision and delegation to support staff. The role may include other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Performs direct patient care and evidence-based practice in a safe, ethical, and legal manner.
  2. Performs all duties within the scope of the speech-language pathology practice guidelines.
  3. Develops and revises a plan of care based on the initial assessment, continual reassessment of patient/caregiver needs, patient history, diagnosis, physician orders, protocol, expected outcomes, and patient needs and goals to include discharge plans as appropriate.
  4. Evaluates patient response to treatment, measures change and development, shares findings, and makes appropriate recommendations and referrals.
  5. Directs patient participation, progression, and discharge in accordance with clinical best practice guidelines to restore, reinforce, and enhance patient performance.
  6. Documents all skilled and medically necessary care thoroughly, timely, and accurately in accordance with departmental policy.
  7. Documentation, charges, and care must comply with Medicare, State, Federal, insurance, and payor requirements as well as departmental policy.
  8. Maintains patient and organizational confidentiality at all times.
  9. Performs duties in accordance with departmental productivity standards.
  10. Independent in using time wisely.
  11. Promotes service excellence with patient scheduling and accommodation with appointments.
  12. Responds positively to changes in the schedule and site of speech-language pathology services.
  13. Uses unscheduled time to develop programs, complete projects, or assist the department as needed.
  14. Promotes the appropriate utilization of resources.
  15. Collaborates and consults with other health care professionals and shares gained knowledge.
  16. Delegates appropriately to rehabilitation aides.
  17. Serves in a mentorship capacity to students.
  18. Provides consultation to individuals, businesses, schools, government agencies, or other organizations by providing professional advice or opinion, recommending solutions, or producing a specific outcome.
  19. Serves on departmental or organizational committees as appropriate.
  20. Delivers a high level of customer service to all internal and external customers.
  21. Fosters and promotes the speech-language pathology profession; attends professional continuing education courses and hospital in-services.
  22. Strives to master the skills necessary to exceed the expectations of the people we serve.
  23. Works effectively as a member of the rehab team and Winona Health team through collaborative partnerships to promote speech-language pathology and foster effective communication and departmental planning.
  24. Participates in performance improvement and completes all required in-service programs to ensure standards are met and skills are kept current.
  25. Attends mandatory staff meetings and completes mandatory educational requirements of Winona Health staff
  26. Understands, supports, and integrates into one's position the organization's vision/mission/values (see last section.)
  27. Performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills and Experience:
Skills and Abilities
  1. Must be able to demonstrate appropriate clinical skills and abilities including but not
    limited to:
    1. Acute care
    2. Bedside swallow evaluations/dysphagia treatment
    3. Collaboration with nursing, dietician and dietary staffs
    4. Evaluation and treatment planning and provision for communication and cognition post CVA and other diagnoses
    5. Videofluoroscopic Swallow Studies
    6. Collaboration with radiologist, radiologist technicians, dietary staff
    7. Outpatient
  2. Evaluation and treatment planning and provision for:
    1. Pediatric language delays/disorders
    2. Pediatric phonological and articulation delays/disorders
    3. Fluency disorders
    4. Pragmatic difficulties d/t ASD and other diagnoses
    5. Pediatric and adult dysphagia
    6. Cognition disorder/deficits
    7. Communication difficulties d/t neurological damage/disorder
    8. Voice disorders d/t Parkinson's Disease and other diagnoses
Education and Experience
  1. M.S. degree from an accredited related curriculum.
  2. Valid Driver's License.
  3. CPR Certification.
  4. Must be certified or eligible for certification of clinical competence.
  5. Minimum of one-year clinical experience desired.
