NYPL is seeking a Junior Library Custodian to maintain an environment that is clean, safe and comfortable for our Library users and employees.The Facilities Department is hosting a hiring event on Monday, September 23rd 2024 from 10am-2pm. If you are interested in attending, please fill out this Event Registration form in addition to the job application.Responsibilities: Under the general supervision of the Cleaning Operations Coordinator, the Junior Library Custodian:Cleans and maintains the Library building and groundsBuffs, strips and waxes floorsShampoos carpetsReplaces light bulbsHandles snow removalPrepares maintenance reports and maintains inventory of bathroom and cleaning suppliesTakes necessary action to safeguard the building during an emergency and escalates issues to appropriate personnelCommunicates with Library Manager on a regular basis to determine branch needsTravels between branches within assigned networkWill be assigned to two sites and may be assigned to work at other locations as neededRequired Education, Experience & SkillsRequired Education & CertificationsHigh School Diploma or GED and prior basic custodial/building superintendent workRequired SkillsSuccessfully demonstrated experience and knowledge of the standard practices, materials and equipment to be used in commercial building cleaning work.Knowledge of material safety data sheets, safety practices and proceduresGood interpersonal, verbal and written communication skillsDemonstrated flexibility and reliabilityAbility to perform manual work consisting of cleaning, heavy lifting, snow removal and working from high ladders, scaffolds and electrical liftsHeavy lifting may be requiredPerforms related duties as requiredValid driver's license and clear driving recordMust pass physical examManagerial/Supervisory ResponsibilitiesN/APreferred QualificationsKnowledge of mixing chemicals to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specificationsKnowledge of using commercial cleaning equipmentProblem-solve maintenance issues as they ariseMore...Core ValuesAll team members are expected and encouraged to embody the NYPL Core Values:Be Helpful to patrons and colleaguesBe Resourceful in solving problems Be Curious in all aspects of your workBe Welcoming and InclusiveWork EnvironmentPublic Service LibraryPhysical DutiesModerate to extensive physical effort is required, including bending, pushing, pulling and lifting up to 50 lbsMay require travel to Library buildings throughout NYCPre-Placement Physical Required?YesUnion Local 374FLSA StatusNon-ExemptSchedule40 hours per week
