OVERVIEW

The Occupational Therapist candidate will develop and implement individual, family-based, and group based occupational therapy services at the USCRI Cleveland Field Office. This is an additional Occupational Therapist position that requires the candidate to assess the occupational needs of the refugee clients, develop programs to address those needs, and assess the outcomes under the direction of the Director of USCRI Cleveland and the Occupational Therapy team within our health and wellness services. This will occur in collaboration with other staff and volunteers. Therapy will be delivered in a variety of contexts, as appropriate, including at the USCRI Field Office, in the community, and in clients' homes. Since experiential learning is central to the work of the OT, interventions in natural settings as much as feasible are critical to their effectiveness. The ideal candidate must be self-motivating and demonstrate leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability skills. The candidate will be involved in facilitating and/or supervising occupational therapy students in various formats.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Case Assessment and Client Intervention
  • Meet with staff and clients to determine client and programmatic needs.
  • Use the culturally, psychometrically, and practically best available measures to assess specific client occupational needs.
  • Use the same or similar tools to assess programmatic and intervention outcomes.
  • Provide client-centered, evidence-based, occupation-centered, culturally appropriate interventions. This entails teaching clients to learn the cultural values, practices, and norms of life in the US while maintaining their own cultural values and practices.
  • Demonstrate cultural humility as an aspect of therapeutic use of self.
  • Demonstrate trauma-informed care in all dealings with the clients.
  • Use specific interventions to achieve the overall goals of occupational therapy: Achieve health, well-being, and participation in life through engagement in occupation.
  • Program Development and General Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the Director and Occupational Therapy team and in collaboration with the staff and volunteers determine the focus of programs to be developed and the coordination of services.
  • Using available resources and expertise develop intervention programs to address specific needs.
  • Make appropriate arrangements for space, equipment, personnel, and timing for implementing programs.
  • Coordinate with OT and OTA educational programs to place students at USCRI-Cleveland.
  • Supervise level I and level II OT and OTA students, as appropriate.
  • Supervise service-learning students in collaboration with their instructors, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with OT educational programs to supervise students in completing administrative, capstone, or research projects.
  • Supervise volunteers who aspire to enter an OT or OTA educational program.
  • At all times the OT will practice and interact professionally, i.e., ethically, equitably, and inclusively.
  • Represent USCRI Cleveland and its clients at professional meetings.
  • Advocate to funders, policymakers, and the public for services provided or proposed at USCRI orally and in writing.
  • Maintain case files, collect program data, and submit written reports as required;
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with regional health care and relative service providers
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Licensed to practice occupational therapy in Ohio
  • Successful background check
  • Valid Ohio driver's license
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to develop programs
  • Excellent interactive skills including with others from different cultures
  • Committed to serving others who experience occupational injustice or deprivation
  • Committed to advocating for OT services for promoting health, especially mental health
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two year's practice experience as an occupational therapist
  • Previous work or experience with refugees
  • Previous work in community service provision
  • Experience working with interpreters and/or linguistically diverse clients
  • Practice in providing services for mental health promotion
  • Prior experience providing case management or related services to refugees, asylees, and other immigrants preferred;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate and build lasting relationships and partnerships;
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, supervise others, and work independently as well as in collaboration with others;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically Word, PowerPoint, and Excel and database programs as required;
  • Highly adaptable and flexible with the ability to multi-task and prioritize in a demanding work environment;
  • Must have a valid state-issued driver's license, automobile insurance, clean driving record and reliable personal transportation;
  • Must pass a criminal background check and other screening requirements;
  • Ability to travel locally as required; and
  • Demonstrated support of USCRI's values by exhibiting respect for others, maintenance of confidential information and an appreciation of a multicultural workplace.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
  • Satisfactory Completion of USCRI's Orientation and Training; and
  • Complete additional training as identified by supervisor(s), program director or Human Resources
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity;
  • Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting and standing, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands;
  • Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds), bending, pulling, and carrying;
  • Quantitative/mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, standard measurements);
  • Need for work in the community, including being outdoors, in client homes, etc.; and
