Roles and Responsibilities:

We are seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer in our Allentown, PA global headquarters who will be responsible of address complex mechanical design challenges while working in an innovative company at the forefront of the energy transition.

The successful candidate will harness their understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals and materials structure/property/performance in both high temperature and cryogenic temperature static equipment.

While no pre-existing knowledge of specific processes, software, or fabrication methods is required, the candidate will be expected to learn them as needed for specific projects.

The candidate will be required to solve a diverse variety of problems, which may involve stress analysis, high cycle fatigue, fluidization, flow maldistribution, solids handling, precision tolerancing, thermal stress, post-yield behavior, high temperature creep, fracture mechanics, and others as needed.

They will support Air Products' suite of technologies in air separation, process gases, carbon capture, and green hydrogen. The mechanical engineer will be involved in new technology development and mechanical design issues across construction sites and operating plants.

This role will collaborate with other engineers in the US, Europe, Middle East and Asia to advance Air Products' technologies and competitiveness.

Job Duties

  • Lead and/or support research programs to develop innovative designs of equipment and equipment internals.
  • Design and operate lab-scale process equipment to investigate issues such as distribution, fluid flow, heat transfer, and cyclical operation.
  • Perform stress/structural and failure analysis in support of research initiatives, capital projects, and operating plants.
  • Collaborate with vendors, universities, and test facilities to advance mechanical engineering capabilities.
  • The job responsibilities may require up to 10% travel, including plant visits, conference travel, manufacturing and supplier visits.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in mechanical engineering
  • Broad mechanical engineering fundamentals
  • Ability to function well in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • 5 years' experience in a mechanical engineering role in the chemical process industries and/or energy industry.
  • Experience of mechanical design work at fabrication shops, construction sites and operating plants.
  • Experience working with prototype mechanical designs (either experimental or computational or both).
Desired but not required:
  • Experience with gasification, ammonia production, CO2 capture and sequestration, and/or hydrogen production.
  • Experience with mechanical engineering design codes
  • Knowledge of machining techniques, fabrication methods and welding processes.
  • Experience with conducting finite element analysis (FEA) modeling.
  • Experience with nonmetallic materials design.
  • Experience with cryogenic materials performance and testing.
  • Experience with cyclical processes.
