The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing blood draws and specimen collection with expertise and care. A critical aspect of this role is the ability to put patients at ease, ensuring minimal discomfort while obtaining accurate and sufficient samples. This position is vital in delivering high-quality patient care and maintaining the integrity of specimens for testing.
Principal Job Duties:
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, operate centrifuges, and record maintenance data while maintaining a sterile environment.
- Collect and store specimens (blood, urine, fecal) according to established protocols and procedures.
- Clearly explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a courteous manner.
- Utilize both straight needles and butterfly needles, demonstrating proper technique.
- Ensure full understanding and adherence to physicians' orders for tests and specimen collection.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, label specimens accurately, and prepare them for centrifuging, splitting, or freezing as needed.
- Verify the accuracy of test requisitions and specimen labels against medical orders or scripts.
- Package specimens properly for transport, ensuring temperature and handling requirements are met.
- Comply with all relevant OSHA and DEP regulations regarding specimen handling and safety.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times during specimen collection.
- Attend annual training sessions as required by the department.
- Respond to inquiries via phone, providing accurate information regarding lab results and processes.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors or the department.
- Experience: Proven experience in performing venipuncture and handling specimens in a clinical setting.
- Education: Completion of a phlebotomy training program is preferred.
- Certification: Current Phlebotomy Certification is a plus.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in blood draw techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate labeling and handling of specimens.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to provide clear explanations to patients.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures for specimen handling, including compliance with OSHA regulations.
