Job DescriptionUnder supervision, functions as an automotive service technician in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of mechanical systems and components in automobiles and light and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel driven automotive equipment.Essential Duties:Inspects vehicles to ensure mechanical components and automotive systems (e.g., engines, transmissions, brake systems, exhaust and emissions control systems) are secure and operating properlyReads work orders describing symptoms or problems and uses testing equipment to diagnose and determine source of malfunctions and problemsRefers to technical service manuals and schematic to troubleshoot mechanical problemsUses hand and power tools to dismantle, repair, or replace worn parts and reassemble componentsOverhauls and replaces engines and rebuilds componentsRepairs or replaces hoses, valves, compressors, and pumpsRepairs and replaces drive shafts, differentials, and transmissionsAligns and balances wheels and repairs or replaces tie rodsRuns operational tests on components to ensure that repairs and adjustments made were properPrepares work activity reportsFabricates metal parts by setting up and operating conventional or computer-controlled machine tools (e.g., lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses) and/or welds and cuts parts for custom fit, as requiredUses hydraulic jacks or hoists to raise and examine underside of vehicles, as requiredMaintains clean and orderly work areasPerforms work on electrical components of automotive equipment (e.g., alternators, batteries, starters, lights) when ancillary to other work being performedAdditional duties may be required for this positionCertificates/Security Clearances/OtherTHIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICEThese positions DO NOT REQUIRE a test or interview.
