Position: Fire Protection Design Engineer

Location: Waukegan, IL 60085

Contract Length: 6+ months Work Hours: 24-40 hours per week - This position will start out as part time contract and will move to fulltime in January 2025

I am looking for a Fire Protection Design Engineer to join the Sterling Engineering team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the design and implementation of fire protection systems, particularly in industrial and warehouse settings. This role requires a NICET Level 2 certification in Water-Based Systems Layout, with Level 3 certification preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and Layout: Develop detailed designs for fire protection systems, focusing on water-based systems.
  • Special Hazard Protection: Implement protection strategies for special hazards, including cooling towers and flammable liquids.
  • Guideline Compliance: Ensure all designs comply with Factory Mutual (FM) Guidelines.
  • Software Proficiency: Utilize AutoCAD and Revit for design work. Use HydraCAD, AutoSprink, or SprinkCAD to perform hydraulic calculations.
  • Standards and Codes: Apply knowledge of national standards such as IBC, IFC, and NFPA to all design and construction documents.
  • Underground Fire Main Design: Experience in designing private underground fire mains is preferred.

Qualifications:

  • Certification: NICET Level 2 certification in Water-Based Systems Layout is required; Level 3 certification is preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of design experience in industrial and warehouse environments.
  • Special Hazards: Proven experience in special hazard protection.
  • FM Guidelines: Familiarity with Factory Mutual (FM) Guidelines.
  • Software Skills: Proficient in AutoCAD and Revit. Capable of using HydraCAD, AutoSprink, or SprinkCAD for hydraulic calculations.
  • Standards Knowledge: Familiarity with national standards (IBC, IFC, NFPA) and experience in drafting construction documents.
  • Fire Main Design: Experience with private underground fire main design is preferred.
