Job Summary

Manage all facets of Manufacturing for Sunstar Engineering Americas with responsibilities including production, warehousing and in-house trucking/conveyance for Chemical and Motorcycle manufacturing locations. The Manufacturing Manager will be required to work closely with other Sunstar Engineering Americas department leaders, make time-sensitive critical decisions and develop high-performing departmental teams. These actions are all purposed to create a safety and environmental compliance first culture, provide high quality, value-added products for our customers and a work environment where employees are set up to succeed, feel supported and know the value of their contribution as a team and an individual. 

Responsibilities

Safety

  • Promote and lead by example in the use of engineering controls, administrative controls and/or PPE to do safe work.
  • Partner with EHS coordinator/manager and/or production engineering to remove or mitigate hazards in the workplace. Seek solutions that are sustainable, trainable and if possible, completely remove the opportunity of team members to operate unsafely.
  • Consider every accident as preventable and each incident as an opportunity to improve safety in the facility. Support EHS coordinator in accident and near-miss investigations. Encourage open reporting of safety issues before incidents occur.

Environmental Compliance

  • Understand Manufacturing Department’s environmental aspects and impacts. Develop/lead initiatives with Business Systems Team to reduce/eliminate waste and/or improve sustainability targets.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of programs to utilize rework and reduce scrap. Seek opportunities for continuous improvement and engaging Production Supervisors and Team Leaders to drive reductions.
  • Support EHS coordinator/manager in reacting to environmental-based issues that could impact external compliance, violate internal standards or third-party sustainability reporting.

Quality

  • Promote strict adherence to all standard work and provide understanding as to the purpose of controls as they impact the quality of the finished product.
  • Champion continuous improvement of our people and standard work to reduce decisions, actions, and errors to impact finished product quality.
  • Participate in root cause analysis teams for manufacturing derived non-conformances. Include relevant team members in the process.

Efficiency

  • Establish realistic throughput goals that support departmental metrics. Drive individual and team accountability to hit targets.
  • Lead Production Supervisors to control variables that can be controlled to reduce cycle time variations.
  • Define and execute initiatives to remove roadblocks that prevent team members from achieving optimal efficiency.
  • Use a ‘lean’ mentality to best apply manpower and support equipment/services (fork trucks, in-house trucking, shipping/receiving docks) to maintain high level of up-time on compounding process.

Employee/Team development

  • Directly manage Production Supervisors. Coordinate with them to operate their teams across multiple sites and shifts to meet targets and production demand.
  • Coach Production Supervisors and Team Leaders in how to develop individuals, build functional teams, and be consistent in accountability, recognition, and discipline.
  • Create and support programs for on-boarding, OJT training, and cross-training to ensure competence and operational flexibility.
  • Identify opportunities for functional and soft skill training for all staff to improve task effectiveness, communication, teamwork, etc.
  • As a member of management, participate, conduct, and promote staff engagement activities throughout all levels of the organization.
  • Intentionally connect with all members of the manufacturing structure. Be a visible presence in all production areas taking advantage to encourage, coach, and demonstrate value for the well-being of all team members.

Qualifications

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Engineering, Business or related field with a minimum of 10 years of experience in a manufacturing environment or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have 5 years of experience direct management or supervision in a manufacturing environment.
  • Must have basic level of financial acumen to support budget development and accountability, create business cases for continuous improvement and make sound financial decisions related to staffing.
  • Must have good decision-making skills, as well as the discernment when to escalate, delegate or engage cross functional teams to allow for the best outcome.
  • Must Demonstrate good written and verbal communication to all levels of the organization. Done with a purpose of conveying clarity, calling to a purpose, and instilling trust.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and demonstrates ability to learn other applications used on the manufacturing floor.
