The Position

(minimum wage increase to $16.00/hour effective January 1, 2024)

Under the general direction of the City of Santee Fire Administration Office, this position maintains control and assists children at crossing areas in the vicinity of Santee School District's elementary schools.

Shift Schedules:
Regular Crossing Guards work at most 10 hours/week, 5 days/week. Available shifts are:

Morning Shifts:
  • 7:00 - 8:00 a.m.
  • 7:05 - 7:50 a.m.
  • 7:30 - 8:30 a.m.
Afternoon Shifts:
  • 1:20 - 2:20 p.m.
  • 1:25 - 2:25 p.m.
  • 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
  • 2:40 - 3:40 p.m. (depending on the school)
Substitute Crossing Guards work when needed to fill in for regular Crossing Guards that are on vacation, sick, etc.

Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Direct and regulate the flow of traffic so that school children can cross streets safely;
  • Interact and assist with, and exercise control over children waiting to cross at the intersection;
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with the public;
  • Learn, understand and enforce related pedestrian, vehicle and general safety laws and practices;
  • Follow proper safety techniques; and
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this classification. An example would be:

Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Experience: Interaction with children and the general public. At least one (1) year of experience working with children is desirable.
Special Requirements

Applicants must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.

The applicant(s) selected will be subject to a criminal history investigation through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and a thorough reference check. A waiver for reference and background information must be completed.

City of Santee employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

This position is considered part-time temporary and does not receive any benefits other than participation in the appropriate retirement plan (CalPERS or PARS). The City only participates in the Medicare portion of social security.

PARS participants contribution 3.75% of salary to their retirement account, which is matched by the City.

PERS participants currently contribute a percentage of salary to their retirement account based on their retirement formula, with the City paying the additional required amount.

Regular Crossing Guards work at most 10 hours/week, 5 days/week. Crossing Guard positions are typically filled initially as "Reserves" who are expected to be available to fill-in for regular Crossing Guards when necessary. Reserve hours are never guaranteed. Notice is usually provided 24 hours in advance, but can be as little as 1 hour notice. It is very important to the City that Reserves are available when needed.
