General Statement of Duties:

The Risk Manager position exists to providesupport for the direct processing and review of risk management and patientsafety issues. The position is responsible for coordinating investigations andfacilitating root cause analyses of patient issues, supporting patient safetyrelated to performance improvement activities, and compile and trend datarelated to patient safety, risk management, and service recovery. The RiskManager is the system administrator for the Risk and Incident reporting systemand serves as the primary contact for any risk related concerns within theorganization.

Essential Duties:
  1. Risk Identification, Evaluation, and Analysis - Responds to, and investigates risk incidents and complaints and grievances from patients, families and visitors. Maintains documentation of complaints and incidents and monitors such occurrences for trends. Identifies problems, develops or assists management in the development of action plans for correction. Monitors and measures the success of improvement efforts to prevent identified negative trends and provides reports as appropriate. Provides general risk education for staff and providers, Identifies trends related to Risk/Feedback reports as well as risk reduction opportunities. Drafts response to formal complaints and grievances as referenced in the Complaint and Grievance Resolution policy.
  2. Assists in reduction of corporate risks and management of potential claims by working with the Legal Department, General Counsel, Administration, and outside vendors who provide risk management services. Ensures appropriate communication regarding incidents and grievances are followed through with the appropriate individual, including but not limited to administrative staff, legal counsel, and physicians.. Serves as a liaison between the organization and General Counsel for risk specific requests and needs.
  3. System Administrator for Risk Reporting System including management of Risk, Feedback (Complaint/Grievances) and Root Cause Modules. Duties involve periodic review of system for follow up and process flow. System Administrator creates user scopes and profiles, updates Site and Departments based on operational changes and makes form revisions in collaboration with Leadership and system support services. System Administrator also provides training and education to new Leadership and provides group training sessions based on requests and needs.
  4. Leads Proactive Risk Assessments to ensure that the organization is consideringpotential risks and mitigating the risk to best of the organization'sabilities. These assessments can include Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA),culture of safety surveys, and other appropriate proactive assessments withexternal entities that will enhance our patient safety program.
  5. Facilitate Root Cause Analysis (RCA) process when Serious Reportable Events (SRE) or Serious Adverse Events (SAE) occur. Once the RCA has been conducted, the risk manager facilitates a debrief session after an SRE/SAE, coordinates with leadership staff to conduct a RCA and develop a measurable action plan.
  6. Facilitates Risk-related committees and participates on a variety of committees and project teams that seek opportunities to improve outcomes and improve patient safety and outcomes.
  7. Participates in helping to reduce risk and ensure compliance related regulatory standards. Participates in the regulatory surveys as well as audits to ensure compliance.
  8. Participates in duties assigned where the risk skill set and expertise is needed.

Requirements:
  • Associate's degree in related field required; Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) preferred.
  • 6-8 years of related experience required.
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) required; may obtain within first 12 months of employment.
