Role

The Construction Controller reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is a seasoned and proficient specialist in job costing, particularly within the realm of general contracting and development. This role will oversee project accounting and financial operations, ensuring accurate cost allocation, budgeting, and reporting for development and construction activities. Additionally, the Controller will play a crucial role in providing financial insights and fostering transparent communication. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, a comprehensive understanding of accounting principles, and extensive experience in job costing methodologies within the general contracting and development sectors.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise all facets of the construction accounting department, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, construction draws, job cost reporting and budgeting and financial reporting.
  • Develop and implement job costing systems tailored to the nuances of general contracting and development projects, accurately tracking costs, revenues, and profitability.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers to establish and maintain project budgets, ensuring alignment with financial objectives and industry standards.
  • Monitor project costs and variances, conducting in-depth analyses to identify budget issues and improve project efficiency.
  • Prepare detailed financial reports and analyses pertaining to project performance, including comprehensive cost-to-complete assessments, revenue recognition, and project profitability assessments.
  • Liaise with project managers and operational teams to facilitate timely and accurate invoicing and billing processes.
  • Assist in the formulation of annual budgets and forecasts, leveraging insights derived from job costing data to inform financial projections and strategic decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting principles, standards, and regulatory requirements, including GAAP and industry-specific guidelines.
  • Lead the month-end and year-end close process, overseeing reconciliations, journal entries, and the preparation of financial statements.
  • Institute and maintain standard policies, procedures, internal controls, and processes that influence efficient and effective business processes.
  • Establish key performance benchmarks and monitoring and maintaining ongoing performance against established metrics.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to accounting staff, fostering a culture of growth, collaboration, and excellence.
  • Establish departmental goals as well as individual goals for the construction accounting team.
  • Manage and/or participate on special projects and corporate initiatives, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA certification preferred.
  • Proven experience in a Controller or similar role, with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, within the general contracting and development sectors.
  • Demonstrated expertise in job costing methodologies, particularly within construction and development projects.
  • Strong knowledge of financial and accounting systems functionality.
  • Strong proficiency in accounting software (Sage 300, Premier, Procore, etc.) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for detail and the capacity to interpret complex financial data.
  • Exceptional leadership and management skills, with a track record of motivating and developing high-performing teams.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey financial insights to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Superior organizational skills, with the capacity to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven Integrity, professionalism, and discretion when handling sensitive financial information.
  • Well-organized and disciplined in the oversight of details while maintaining the big picture perspective.
